The three-year loss for Neptune (KOSDAQ:217270) shareholders likely driven by its shrinking earnings
While it may not be enough for some shareholders, we think it is good to see the Neptune Company (KOSDAQ:217270) share price up 20% in a single quarter. Meanwhile over the last three years the stock has dropped hard. Indeed, the share price is down a tragic 69% in the last three years. So it's good to see it climbing back up. After all, could be that the fall was overdone.
While the last three years has been tough for Neptune shareholders, this past week has shown signs of promise. So let's look at the longer term fundamentals and see if they've been the driver of the negative returns.

In his essay The Superinvestors of Graham-and-Doddsville Warren Buffett described how share prices do not always rationally reflect the value of a business. One imperfect but simple way to consider how the market perception of a company has shifted is to compare the change in the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price movement.
During five years of share price growth, Neptune moved from a loss to profitability. We would usually expect to see the share price rise as a result. So given the share price is down it's worth checking some other metrics too.
Revenue is actually up 66% over the three years, so the share price drop doesn't seem to hinge on revenue, either. This analysis is just perfunctory, but it might be worth researching Neptune more closely, as sometimes stocks fall unfairly. This could present an opportunity.

A Different Perspective
We regret to report that Neptune shareholders are down 12% for the year. Unfortunately, that's worse than the broader market decline of 1.7%. However, it could simply be that the share price has been impacted by broader market jitters. It might be worth keeping an eye on the fundamentals, in case there's a good opportunity. Unfortunately, last year's performance may indicate unresolved challenges, given that it was worse than the annualised loss of 1.4% over the last half decade. Generally speaking long term share price weakness can be a bad sign, though contrarian investors might want to research the stock in hope of a turnaround.
