Is Kumyang's (KRX:001570) 185% Share Price Increase Well Justified?
The worst result, after buying shares in a company (assuming no leverage), would be if you lose all the money you put in. But on the bright side, if you buy shares in a high quality company at the right price, you can gain well over 100%. For instance, the price of Kumyang Co., Ltd. (KRX:001570) stock is up an impressive 185% over the last five years. On top of that, the share price is up 12% in about a quarter. But this move may well have been assisted by the reasonably buoyant market (up 23% in 90 days).

Kumyang isn't currently profitable, so most analysts would look to revenue growth to get an idea of how fast the underlying business is growing. Generally speaking, companies without profits are expected to grow revenue every year, and at a good clip. That's because fast revenue growth can be easily extrapolated to forecast profits, often of considerable size.
For the last half decade, Kumyang can boast revenue growth at a rate of 2.9% per year. That's not a very high growth rate considering the bottom line. In comparison, the share price rise of 23% per year over the last half a decade is pretty impressive. Shareholders should be pretty happy with that, although interested investors might want to examine the financial data more closely to see if the gains are really justified. Some might suggest that the sentiment around the stock is rather positive.

What about the Total Shareholder Return (TSR)?
Investors should note that there's a difference between Kumyang's total shareholder return (TSR) and its share price change, which we've covered above. The TSR attempts to capture the value of dividends (as if they were reinvested) as well as any spin-offs or discounted capital raisings offered to shareholders. Kumyang's TSR of 195% for the 5 years exceeded its share price return, because it has paid dividends.
A Different Perspective
It's good to see that Kumyang has rewarded shareholders with a total shareholder return of 115% in the last twelve months. That gain is better than the annual TSR over five years, which is 24%. Therefore it seems like sentiment around the company has been positive lately. In the best case scenario, this may hint at some real business momentum, implying that now could be a great time to delve deeper. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important. Like risks, for instance.
