NANO Co., Ltd. (KOSDAQ:187790) Held Back By Insufficient Growth Even After Shares Climb 30%
NANO Co., Ltd. (KOSDAQ:187790) shares have continued their recent momentum with a 30% gain in the last month alone. Longer-term shareholders would be thankful for the recovery in the share price since it's now virtually flat for the year after the recent bounce.
Even after such a large jump in price, NANO may still be sending very bullish signals at the moment with its price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 5.4x, since almost half of all companies in Korea have P/E ratios greater than 14x and even P/E's higher than 31x are not unusual. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the highly reduced P/E.
Recent times have been quite advantageous for NANO as its earnings have been rising very briskly. One possibility is that the P/E is low because investors think this strong earnings growth might actually underperform the broader market in the near future. If that doesn't eventuate, then existing shareholders have reason to be quite optimistic about the future direction of the share price.

Is There Any Growth For NANO?
There's an inherent assumption that a company should far underperform the market for P/E ratios like NANO's to be considered reasonable.
Retrospectively, the last year delivered an exceptional 250% gain to the company's bottom line. Still, EPS has barely risen at all from three years ago in total, which is not ideal. Therefore, it's fair to say that earnings growth has been inconsistent recently for the company.
Weighing that recent medium-term earnings trajectory against the broader market's one-year forecast for expansion of 38% shows it's noticeably less attractive on an annualised basis.
In light of this, it's understandable that NANO's P/E sits below the majority of other companies. It seems most investors are expecting to see the recent limited growth rates continue into the future and are only willing to pay a reduced amount for the stock.
The Bottom Line On NANO's P/E
Shares in NANO are going to need a lot more upward momentum to get the company's P/E out of its slump. It's argued the price-to-earnings ratio is an inferior measure of value within certain industries, but it can be a powerful business sentiment indicator.
We've established that NANO maintains its low P/E on the weakness of its recent three-year growth being lower than the wider market forecast, as expected. Right now shareholders are accepting the low P/E as they concede future earnings probably won't provide any pleasant surprises. If recent medium-term earnings trends continue, it's hard to see the share price rising strongly in the near future under these circumstances.
