Regular readers will know that we love our dividends at Simply Wall St, which is why it's exciting to see Korean Reinsurance Company (KRX:003690) is about to trade ex-dividend in the next four days. Investors can purchase shares before the 29th of December in order to be eligible for this dividend, which will be paid on the 14th of April.
The upcoming dividend for Korean Reinsurance is ₩500 per share, increased from last year's total dividends per share of ₩275. Dividends are a major contributor to investment returns for long term holders, but only if the dividend continues to be paid. We need to see whether the dividend is covered by earnings and if it's growing.

If a company pays out more in dividends than it earned, then the dividend might become unsustainable - hardly an ideal situation. Korean Reinsurance paid out a comfortable 39% of its profit last year.
Generally speaking, the lower a company's payout ratios, the more resilient its dividend usually is.

Have Earnings And Dividends Been Growing?
Businesses with strong growth prospects usually make the best dividend payers, because it's easier to grow dividends when earnings per share are improving. Investors love dividends, so if earnings fall and the dividend is reduced, expect a stock to be sold off heavily at the same time. This is why it's a relief to see Korean Reinsurance earnings per share are up 4.4% per annum over the last five years.
The main way most investors will assess a company's dividend prospects is by checking the historical rate of dividend growth. In the last 10 years, Korean Reinsurance has lifted its dividend by approximately 5.9% a year on average. It's encouraging to see the company lifting dividends while earnings are growing, suggesting at least some corporate interest in rewarding shareholders.
The Bottom Line
Is Korean Reinsurance an attractive dividend stock, or better left on the shelf? It has been growing its earnings per share somewhat in recent years, although it reinvests more than half its earnings in the business, which could suggest there are some growth projects that have not yet reached fruition. In summary, Korean Reinsurance appears to have some promise as a dividend stock, and we'd suggest taking a closer look at it.
With that in mind, a critical part of thorough stock research is being aware of any risks that stock currently faces. To that end, you should learn about the 2 warning signs we've spotted with Korean Reinsurance (including 1 which doesn't sit too well with us).
