Optimistic Investors Push Pangrim Co., Ltd. (KRX:003610) Shares Up 27% But Growth Is Lacking
Pangrim Co., Ltd. (KRX:003610) shares have continued their recent momentum with a 27% gain in the last month alone. The last month tops off a massive increase of 120% in the last year.
After such a large jump in price, you could be forgiven for thinking Pangrim is a stock not worth researching with a price-to-sales ratios (or "P/S") of 1.3x, considering almost half the companies in Korea's Luxury industry have P/S ratios below 0.4x. However, the P/S might be high for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.

How Pangrim Has Been Performing
As an illustration, revenue has deteriorated at Pangrim over the last year, which is not ideal at all. Perhaps the market believes the company can do enough to outperform the rest of the industry in the near future, which is keeping the P/S ratio high. If not, then existing shareholders may be quite nervous about the viability of the share price.
Although there are no analyst estimates available for Pangrim, take a look at this free data-rich visualisation to see how the company stacks up on earnings, revenue and cash flow.Do Revenue Forecasts Match The High P/S Ratio?
There's an inherent assumption that a company should outperform the industry for P/S ratios like Pangrim's to be considered reasonable.
Retrospectively, the last year delivered a frustrating 17% decrease to the company's top line. The last three years don't look nice either as the company has shrunk revenue by 11% in aggregate. Accordingly, shareholders would have felt downbeat about the medium-term rates of revenue growth.
Comparing that to the industry, which is predicted to deliver 6.4% growth in the next 12 months, the company's downward momentum based on recent medium-term revenue results is a sobering picture.
With this in mind, we find it worrying that Pangrim's P/S exceeds that of its industry peers. Apparently many investors in the company are way more bullish than recent times would indicate and aren't willing to let go of their stock at any price. There's a very good chance existing shareholders are setting themselves up for future disappointment if the P/S falls to levels more in line with the recent negative growth rates.
What Does Pangrim's P/S Mean For Investors?
The large bounce in Pangrim's shares has lifted the company's P/S handsomely. Using the price-to-sales ratio alone to determine if you should sell your stock isn't sensible, however it can be a practical guide to the company's future prospects.
We've established that Pangrim currently trades on a much higher than expected P/S since its recent revenues have been in decline over the medium-term. When we see revenue heading backwards and underperforming the industry forecasts, we feel the possibility of the share price declining is very real, bringing the P/S back into the realm of reasonability. Should recent medium-term revenue trends persist, it would pose a significant risk to existing shareholders' investments and prospective investors will have a hard time accepting the current value of the stock.
