Ilsung Construction Co., Ltd. (KRX:013360) shareholders should be happy to see the share price up 27% in the last quarter. But that doesn't change the reality of under-performance over the last twelve months. The cold reality is that the stock has dropped 19% in one year, under-performing the market.

While the efficient markets hypothesis continues to be taught by some, it has been proven that markets are over-reactive dynamic systems, and investors are not always rational. One way to examine how market sentiment has changed over time is to look at the interaction between a company's share price and its earnings per share (EPS).

Unhappily, Ilsung Construction had to report a 42% decline in EPS over the last year. The share price fall of 19% isn't as bad as the reduction in earnings per share. It may have been that the weak EPS was not as bad as some had feared.

A Different Perspective

Ilsung Construction shareholders are down 18% for the year (even including dividends), but the market itself is up 34%. However, keep in mind that even the best stocks will sometimes underperform the market over a twelve month period. On the bright side, long term shareholders have made money, with a gain of 4% per year over half a decade. If the fundamental data continues to indicate long term sustainable growth, the current sell-off could be an opportunity worth considering. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand Ilsung Construction better, we need to consider many other factors.
