It might be old fashioned, but we really like to invest in companies that make a profit, each and every year. However, sometimes companies receive a one-off boost (or reduction) to their profit, and it's not always clear whether statutory profits are a good guide, going forward. In this article, we'll look at how useful this year's statutory profit is, when analysing SIMPAC (KRX:009160).

While SIMPAC was able to generate revenue of ₩354.0b in the last twelve months, we think its profit result of ₩2.70b was more important. While it managed to grow its revenue over the last three years, its profit has moved in the other direction, as you can see in the chart below.

Not all profits are equal, and we can learn more about the nature of a company's past profitability by diving deeper into the financial statements. This article will discuss how unusual items have impacted SIMPAC's most recent profit results. Note: we always recommend investors check balance sheet strength. The Impact Of Unusual Items On Profit

To properly understand SIMPAC's profit results, we need to consider the ₩2.2b gain attributed to unusual items. While we like to see profit increases, we tend to be a little more cautious when unusual items have made a big contribution. When we crunched the numbers on thousands of publicly listed companies, we found that a boost from unusual items in a given year is often not repeated the next year. Which is hardly surprising, given the name. SIMPAC had a rather significant contribution from unusual items relative to its profit to September 2020. All else being equal, this would likely have the effect of making the statutory profit a poor guide to underlying earnings power.

Our Take On SIMPAC's Profit Performance

As previously mentioned, SIMPAC's large boost from unusual items won't be there indefinitely, so its statutory earnings are probably a poor guide to its underlying profitability. As a result, we think it may well be the case that SIMPAC's underlying earnings power is lower than its statutory profit. Sadly, its EPS was down over the last twelve months. The goal of this article has been to assess how well we can rely on the statutory earnings to reflect the company's potential, but there is plenty more to consider. So while earnings quality is important, it's equally important to consider the risks facing SIMPAC at this point in time.
