Unless you borrow money to invest, the potential losses are limited. But if you pick the right business to buy shares in, you can make more than you can lose. For example, the S-Fuelcell co., Ltd. (KOSDAQ:288620) share price had more than doubled in just one year - up 117%. In the last week shares have slid back 1.5%. Note that businesses generally develop over the long term, so the returns over the last year might not reflect a long term trend.

There is no denying that markets are sometimes efficient, but prices do not always reflect underlying business performance. One flawed but reasonable way to assess how sentiment around a company has changed is to compare the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price.

During the last year S-Fuelcell saw its earnings per share (EPS) increase strongly. We don't think the exact number is a good guide to the sustainable growth rate, but we do think this sort of increase is impressive. So we're unsurprised to see the share price gaining ground. We're real advocates of letting inflection points like this guide our research as stock pickers.

What about the Total Shareholder Return (TSR)?

Investors should note that there's a difference between S-Fuelcell's total shareholder return (TSR) and its share price change, which we've covered above. The TSR is a return calculation that accounts for the value of cash dividends (assuming that any dividend received was reinvested) and the calculated value of any discounted capital raisings and spin-offs. We note that S-Fuelcell's TSR, at 123% is higher than its share price return of 117%. When you consider it hasn't been paying a dividend, this data suggests shareholders have benefitted from a spin-off, or had the opportunity to acquire attractively priced shares in a discounted capital raising.

A Different Perspective

It's nice to see that S-Fuelcell shareholders have gained 123% over the last year. We regret to report that the share price is down 4.0% over ninety days. Shorter term share price moves often don't signify much about the business itself. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance.
