Wonik Pne (KOSDAQ:217820) adds ₩22b to market cap in the past 7 days, though investors from three years ago are still down 75%

Simply Wall St

This week we saw the Wonik Pne Co., Ltd. (KOSDAQ:217820) share price climb by 24%. But the last three years have seen a terrible decline. Indeed, the share price is down a whopping 75% in the last three years. So we're relieved for long term holders to see a bit of uplift. Of course the real question is whether the business can sustain a turnaround.

On a more encouraging note the company has added ₩22b to its market cap in just the last 7 days, so let's see if we can determine what's driven the three-year loss for shareholders.

Because Wonik Pne made a loss in the last twelve months, we think the market is probably more focussed on revenue and revenue growth, at least for now. When a company doesn't make profits, we'd generally hope to see good revenue growth. Some companies are willing to postpone profitability to grow revenue faster, but in that case one would hope for good top-line growth to make up for the lack of earnings.

Over three years, Wonik Pne grew revenue at 17% per year. That's a pretty good rate of top-line growth. So it's hard to believe the share price decline of 21% per year is due to the revenue. More likely, the market was spooked by the cost of that revenue. This is exactly why investors need to diversify - even when a loss making company grows revenue, it can fail to deliver for shareholders.

A Different Perspective

We regret to report that Wonik Pne shareholders are down 48% for the year. Unfortunately, that's worse than the broader market decline of 5.3%. However, it could simply be that the share price has been impacted by broader market jitters. It might be worth keeping an eye on the fundamentals, in case there's a good opportunity. Unfortunately, last year's performance may indicate unresolved challenges, given that it was worse than the annualised loss of 11% over the last half decade. Generally speaking long term share price weakness can be a bad sign, though contrarian investors might want to research the stock in hope of a turnaround. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too.
