The 33% return this week takes FreeMs' (KOSDAQ:053160) shareholders five-year gains to 164%
When you buy shares in a company, it's worth keeping in mind the possibility that it could fail, and you could lose your money. But on a lighter note, a good company can see its share price rise well over 100%. Long term FreeMs Corporation (KOSDAQ:053160) shareholders would be well aware of this, since the stock is up 157% in five years. It's also good to see the share price up 62% over the last quarter. The company reported its financial results recently; you can catch up on the latest numbers by reading our company report.
The past week has proven to be lucrative for FreeMs investors, so let's see if fundamentals drove the company's five-year performance.

To paraphrase Benjamin Graham: Over the short term the market is a voting machine, but over the long term it's a weighing machine. By comparing earnings per share (EPS) and share price changes over time, we can get a feel for how investor attitudes to a company have morphed over time.
During five years of share price growth, FreeMs actually saw its EPS drop 1.2% per year.
So it's hard to argue that the earnings per share are the best metric to judge the company, as it may not be optimized for profits at this point. Since the change in EPS doesn't seem to correlate with the change in share price, it's worth taking a look at other metrics.
We doubt the modest 0.3% dividend yield is attracting many buyers to the stock. In contrast revenue growth of 5.6% per year is probably viewed as evidence that FreeMs is growing, a real positive. It's quite possible that management are prioritizing revenue growth over EPS growth at the moment.

What About Dividends?
It is important to consider the total shareholder return, as well as the share price return, for any given stock. The TSR incorporates the value of any spin-offs or discounted capital raisings, along with any dividends, based on the assumption that the dividends are reinvested. Arguably, the TSR gives a more comprehensive picture of the return generated by a stock. In the case of FreeMs, it has a TSR of 164% for the last 5 years. That exceeds its share price return that we previously mentioned. And there's no prize for guessing that the dividend payments largely explain the divergence!
A Different Perspective
We're pleased to report that FreeMs shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 23% over one year. Of course, that includes the dividend. That gain is better than the annual TSR over five years, which is 21%. Therefore it seems like sentiment around the company has been positive lately. Given the share price momentum remains strong, it might be worth taking a closer look at the stock, lest you miss an opportunity. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand FreeMs better, we need to consider many other factors. For instance, we've identified 3 warning signs for FreeMs (1 is a bit concerning) that you should be aware of.
