Seoyon E-Hwa Co., Ltd. (KRX:200880) shareholders might be concerned after seeing the share price drop 10% in the last week. But over the last year the share price action has been satisfactory. We say this because the stock (which is up 56%) actually surpassed the market return of (49%).

Given that Seoyon E-Hwa didn't make a profit in the last twelve months, we'll focus on revenue growth to form a quick view of its business development. Shareholders of unprofitable companies usually expect strong revenue growth. Some companies are willing to postpone profitability to grow revenue faster, but in that case one does expect good top-line growth.

Seoyon E-Hwa actually shrunk its revenue over the last year, with a reduction of 3.3%. Despite the lack of revenue growth, the stock has returned a solid 56% the last twelve months. We can correlate the share price rise with revenue or profit growth, but it seems the market had previously expected weaker results, and sentiment around the stock is improving.

What About Dividends?

As well as measuring the share price return, investors should also consider the total shareholder return (TSR). Whereas the share price return only reflects the change in the share price, the TSR includes the value of dividends (assuming they were reinvested) and the benefit of any discounted capital raising or spin-off. So for companies that pay a generous dividend, the TSR is often a lot higher than the share price return. As it happens, Seoyon E-Hwa's TSR for the last year was 58%, which exceeds the share price return mentioned earlier. This is largely a result of its dividend payments!

A Different Perspective

It's nice to see that Seoyon E-Hwa shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 58% over the last year. And that does include the dividend. There's no doubt those recent returns are much better than the TSR loss of 8% per year over five years. We generally put more weight on the long term performance over the short term, but the recent improvement could hint at a (positive) inflection point within the business. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too. Consider for instance, the ever-present spectre of investment risk.
