Hanon Systems' (KRX:018880) price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 67.9x might make it look like a strong sell right now compared to the market in Korea, where around half of the companies have P/E ratios below 13x and even P/E's below 7x are quite common. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/E at face value as there may be an explanation why it's so lofty.

Hanon Systems certainly has been doing a good job lately as its earnings growth has been positive while most other companies have been seeing their earnings go backwards. It seems that many are expecting the company to continue defying the broader market adversity, which has increased investors’ willingness to pay up for the stock. You'd really hope so, otherwise you're paying a pretty hefty price for no particular reason.

Keen to find out how analysts think Hanon Systems' future stacks up against the industry? In that case, our free report is a great place to start.

How Is Hanon Systems' Growth Trending?

In order to justify its P/E ratio, Hanon Systems would need to produce outstanding growth well in excess of the market.

If we review the last year of earnings growth, the company posted a terrific increase of 149%. However, this wasn't enough as the latest three year period has seen a very unpleasant 54% drop in EPS in aggregate. So unfortunately, we have to acknowledge that the company has not done a great job of growing earnings over that time.

Turning to the outlook, the next three years should generate growth of 92% per annum as estimated by the analysts watching the company. That's shaping up to be materially higher than the 21% per year growth forecast for the broader market.

With this information, we can see why Hanon Systems is trading at such a high P/E compared to the market. Apparently shareholders aren't keen to offload something that is potentially eyeing a more prosperous future.

The Bottom Line On Hanon Systems' P/E

Generally, our preference is to limit the use of the price-to-earnings ratio to establishing what the market thinks about the overall health of a company.

We've established that Hanon Systems maintains its high P/E on the strength of its forecast growth being higher than the wider market, as expected. Right now shareholders are comfortable with the P/E as they are quite confident future earnings aren't under threat. It's hard to see the share price falling strongly in the near future under these circumstances.

It's always necessary to consider the ever-present spectre of investment risk. We've identified 2 warning signs with Hanon Systems, and understanding these should be part of your investment process.
