Does Kuribayashi Steamship (TSE:9171) Have A Healthy Balance Sheet?

David Iben put it well when he said, 'Volatility is not a risk we care about. What we care about is avoiding the permanent loss of capital.' So it seems the smart money knows that debt - which is usually involved in bankruptcies - is a very important factor, when you assess how risky a company is. We can see that Kuribayashi Steamship Co., Ltd. (TSE:9171) does use debt in its business. But the more important question is: how much risk is that debt creating?

Why Does Debt Bring Risk?

Debt and other liabilities become risky for a business when it cannot easily fulfill those obligations, either with free cash flow or by raising capital at an attractive price. If things get really bad, the lenders can take control of the business. While that is not too common, we often do see indebted companies permanently diluting shareholders because lenders force them to raise capital at a distressed price. Having said that, the most common situation is where a company manages its debt reasonably well - and to its own advantage. You can click the graphic below for the historical numbers, but it shows that Kuribayashi Steamship had JP¥18.2b of debt in June 2024, down from JP¥20.0b, one year before. However, it also had JP¥11.7b in cash, and so its net debt is JP¥6.45b.

A Look At Kuribayashi Steamship's Liabilities

According to the last reported balance sheet, Kuribayashi Steamship had liabilities of JP¥14.2b due within 12 months, and liabilities of JP¥32.7b due beyond 12 months. On the other hand, it had cash of JP¥11.7b and JP¥8.26b worth of receivables due within a year. So its liabilities outweigh the sum of its cash and (near-term) receivables by JP¥27.0b.

The deficiency here weighs heavily on the JP¥12.8b company itself, as if a child were struggling under the weight of an enormous back-pack full of books, his sports gear, and a trumpet. So we definitely think shareholders need to watch this one closely. At the end of the day, Kuribayashi Steamship would probably need a major re-capitalization if its creditors were to demand repayment.

In order to size up a company's debt relative to its earnings, we calculate its net debt divided by its earnings before interest, tax, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA) and its earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) divided by its interest expense (its interest cover). Thus we consider debt relative to earnings both with and without depreciation and amortization expenses.

Kuribayashi Steamship has a low debt to EBITDA ratio of only 1.3. But the really cool thing is that it actually managed to receive more interest than it paid, over the last year. So there's no doubt this company can take on debt while staying cool as a cucumber. Fortunately, Kuribayashi Steamship grew its EBIT by 2.1% in the last year, making that debt load look even more manageable. We think that Kuribayashi Steamship's debt does make it a bit risky, after considering the aforementioned data points together.
