It's Down 31% But Fujipream Corporation (TSE:4237) Could Be Riskier Than It Looks
Fujipream Corporation (TSE:4237) shareholders that were waiting for something to happen have been dealt a blow with a 31% share price drop in the last month. Instead of being rewarded, shareholders who have already held through the last twelve months are now sitting on a 31% share price drop.
In spite of the heavy fall in price, you could still be forgiven for feeling indifferent about Fujipream's P/E ratio of 12.6x, since the median price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio in Japan is also close to 13x. Although, it's not wise to simply ignore the P/E without explanation as investors may be disregarding a distinct opportunity or a costly mistake.
For example, consider that Fujipream's financial performance has been poor lately as its earnings have been in decline. It might be that many expect the company to put the disappointing earnings performance behind them over the coming period, which has kept the P/E from falling. If you like the company, you'd at least be hoping this is the case so that you could potentially pick up some stock while it's not quite in favour.

The only time you'd be comfortable seeing a P/E like Fujipream's is when the company's growth is tracking the market closely.
Taking a look back first, the company's earnings per share growth last year wasn't something to get excited about as it posted a disappointing decline of 19%. However, a few very strong years before that means that it was still able to grow EPS by an impressive 177% in total over the last three years. So we can start by confirming that the company has generally done a very good job of growing earnings over that time, even though it had some hiccups along the way.
Weighing that recent medium-term earnings trajectory against the broader market's one-year forecast for expansion of 9.8% shows it's noticeably more attractive on an annualised basis.
With this information, we find it interesting that Fujipream is trading at a fairly similar P/E to the market. Apparently some shareholders believe the recent performance is at its limits and have been accepting lower selling prices.
The Final Word
Fujipream's plummeting stock price has brought its P/E right back to the rest of the market. Generally, our preference is to limit the use of the price-to-earnings ratio to establishing what the market thinks about the overall health of a company.
Our examination of Fujipream revealed its three-year earnings trends aren't contributing to its P/E as much as we would have predicted, given they look better than current market expectations. When we see strong earnings with faster-than-market growth, we assume potential risks are what might be placing pressure on the P/E ratio. At least the risk of a price drop looks to be subdued if recent medium-term earnings trends continue, but investors seem to think future earnings could see some volatility.
