The board of WITZ Corporation (TSE:4440) has announced that it will pay a dividend on the 29th of November, with investors receiving ¥8.00 per share. This means the annual payment will be 1.0% of the current stock price, which is lower than the industry average.

WITZ's Dividend Is Well Covered By Earnings

The dividend yield is a little bit low, but sustainability of the payments is also an important part of evaluating an income stock. Before making this announcement, WITZ was easily earning enough to cover the dividend. This means that most of its earnings are being retained to grow the business.

Looking forward, EPS could fall by 20.1% if the company can't turn things around from the last few years. If the dividend continues along recent trends, we estimate the payout ratio could be 54%, which we consider to be quite comfortable, with most of the company's earnings left over to grow the business in the future.

WITZ Is Still Building Its Track Record

It is great to see that WITZ has been paying a stable dividend for a number of years now, however we want to be a bit cautious about whether this will remain true through a full economic cycle. Since 2019, the annual payment back then was ¥3.00, compared to the most recent full-year payment of ¥8.00. This means that it has been growing its distributions at 22% per annum over that time. We're not overly excited about the relatively short history of dividend payments, however the dividend is growing at a nice rate and we might take a closer look.

Dividend Growth Potential Is Shaky

Investors could be attracted to the stock based on the quality of its payment history. However, things aren't all that rosy. Over the past five years, it looks as though WITZ's EPS has declined at around 20% a year. A sharp decline in earnings per share is not great from from a dividend perspective. Even conservative payout ratios can come under pressure if earnings fall far enough.

Our Thoughts On WITZ's Dividend

Overall, it's nice to see a consistent dividend payment, but we think that longer term, the current level of payment might be unsustainable. The payments haven't been particularly stable and we don't see huge growth potential, but with the dividend well covered by cash flows it could prove to be reliable over the short term. We don't think WITZ is a great stock to add to your portfolio if income is your focus.

Companies possessing a stable dividend policy will likely enjoy greater investor interest than those suffering from a more inconsistent approach. Meanwhile, despite the importance of dividend payments, they are not the only factors our readers should know when assessing a company.
