More Unpleasant Surprises Could Be In Store For Remixpoint, Inc.'s (TSE:3825) Shares After Tumbling 28%
To the annoyance of some shareholders, Remixpoint, Inc. (TSE:3825) shares are down a considerable 28% in the last month, which continues a horrid run for the company. Of course, over the longer-term many would still wish they owned shares as the stock's price has soared 119% in the last twelve months.
In spite of the heavy fall in price, given close to half the companies in Japan have price-to-earnings ratios (or "P/E's") below 14x, you may still consider Remixpoint as a stock to avoid entirely with its 30.4x P/E ratio. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the highly elevated P/E.
Remixpoint certainly has been doing a great job lately as it's been growing earnings at a really rapid pace. The P/E is probably high because investors think this strong earnings growth will be enough to outperform the broader market in the near future. If not, then existing shareholders might be a little nervous about the viability of the share price.

Is There Enough Growth For Remixpoint?
Remixpoint's P/E ratio would be typical for a company that's expected to deliver very strong growth, and importantly, perform much better than the market.
Retrospectively, the last year delivered an exceptional 95% gain to the company's bottom line. Despite this strong recent growth, it's still struggling to catch up as its three-year EPS frustratingly shrank by 80% overall. Therefore, it's fair to say the earnings growth recently has been undesirable for the company.
Comparing that to the market, which is predicted to deliver 11% growth in the next 12 months, the company's downward momentum based on recent medium-term earnings results is a sobering picture.
In light of this, it's alarming that Remixpoint's P/E sits above the majority of other companies. It seems most investors are ignoring the recent poor growth rate and are hoping for a turnaround in the company's business prospects. Only the boldest would assume these prices are sustainable as a continuation of recent earnings trends is likely to weigh heavily on the share price eventually.
The Bottom Line On Remixpoint's P/E
A significant share price dive has done very little to deflate Remixpoint's very lofty P/E. Generally, our preference is to limit the use of the price-to-earnings ratio to establishing what the market thinks about the overall health of a company.
Our examination of Remixpoint revealed its shrinking earnings over the medium-term aren't impacting its high P/E anywhere near as much as we would have predicted, given the market is set to grow. When we see earnings heading backwards and underperforming the market forecasts, we suspect the share price is at risk of declining, sending the high P/E lower. Unless the recent medium-term conditions improve markedly, it's very challenging to accept these prices as being reasonable.
It's always necessary to consider the ever-present spectre of investment risk. We've identified 3 warning signs with Remixpoint (at least 1 which is a bit concerning), and understanding them should be part of your investment process.
Of course, you might also be able to find a better stock than Remixpoint. So you may wish to see this free collection of other companies that have reasonable P/E ratios and have grown earnings strongly.
