Lasertec's (TSE:6920) Shareholders Will Receive A Bigger Dividend Than Last Year
Lasertec Corporation (TSE:6920) will increase its dividend from last year's comparable payment on the 29th of September to ¥173.00. This will take the dividend yield to an attractive 2.1%, providing a nice boost to shareholder returns.

Lasertec's Future Dividend Projections Appear Well Covered By Earnings
We like to see robust dividend yields, but that doesn't matter if the payment isn't sustainable. Before making this announcement, Lasertec was paying a whopping 153% as a dividend, but this only made up 31% of its overall earnings. While the business may be attempting to set a balanced dividend policy, a cash payout ratio this high might expose the dividend to being cut if the business ran into some challenges.
Over the next year, EPS is forecast to expand by 4.9%. Assuming the dividend continues along recent trends, we think the payout ratio could be 41% by next year, which is in a pretty sustainable range.
Lasertec Has A Solid Track Record
The company has an extended history of paying stable dividends. The annual payment during the last 10 years was ¥8.50 in 2015, and the most recent fiscal year payment was ¥288.00. This means that it has been growing its distributions at 42% per annum over that time. It is good to see that there has been strong dividend growth, and that there haven't been any cuts for a long time.
The Dividend Looks Likely To Grow
Investors could be attracted to the stock based on the quality of its payment history. Lasertec has seen EPS rising for the last five years, at 60% per annum. Rapid earnings growth and a low payout ratio suggest this company has been effectively reinvesting in its business. Should that continue, this company could have a bright future.
Our Thoughts On Lasertec's Dividend
Overall, this is probably not a great income stock, even though the dividend is being raised at the moment. While the low payout ratio is a redeeming feature, this is offset by the minimal cash to cover the payments. We don't think Lasertec is a great stock to add to your portfolio if income is your focus.
Market movements attest to how highly valued a consistent dividend policy is compared to one which is more unpredictable. Still, investors need to consider a host of other factors, apart from dividend payments, when analysing a company.
