Lasertec Corporation's (TSE:6920) Stock Retreats 28% But Earnings Haven't Escaped The Attention Of Investors
The Lasertec Corporation (TSE:6920) share price has fared very poorly over the last month, falling by a substantial 28%. Longer-term, the stock has been solid despite a difficult 30 days, gaining 20% in the last year.
In spite of the heavy fall in price, Lasertec's price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 34.5x might still make it look like a strong sell right now compared to the market in Japan, where around half of the companies have P/E ratios below 14x and even P/E's below 9x are quite common. However, the P/E might be quite high for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.
Lasertec certainly has been doing a good job lately as it's been growing earnings more than most other companies. It seems that many are expecting the strong earnings performance to persist, which has raised the P/E. You'd really hope so, otherwise you're paying a pretty hefty price for no particular reason.

The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/E as steep as Lasertec's is when the company's growth is on track to outshine the market decidedly.
Taking a look back first, we see that the company grew earnings per share by an impressive 106% last year. The strong recent performance means it was also able to grow EPS by 272% in total over the last three years. So we can start by confirming that the company has done a great job of growing earnings over that time.
Shifting to the future, estimates from the analysts covering the company suggest earnings should grow by 21% per year over the next three years. With the market only predicted to deliver 9.5% each year, the company is positioned for a stronger earnings result.
With this information, we can see why Lasertec is trading at such a high P/E compared to the market. It seems most investors are expecting this strong future growth and are willing to pay more for the stock.
The Final Word
A significant share price dive has done very little to deflate Lasertec's very lofty P/E. It's argued the price-to-earnings ratio is an inferior measure of value within certain industries, but it can be a powerful business sentiment indicator.
We've established that Lasertec maintains its high P/E on the strength of its forecast growth being higher than the wider market, as expected. Right now shareholders are comfortable with the P/E as they are quite confident future earnings aren't under threat. It's hard to see the share price falling strongly in the near future under these circumstances.
You should always think about risks. Case in point, we've spotted 2 warning signs for Lasertec you should be aware of.
