Not Many Are Piling Into Optimus Group Company Limited (TSE:9268) Stock Yet As It Plummets 33%
To the annoyance of some shareholders, Optimus Group Company Limited (TSE:9268) shares are down a considerable 33% in the last month, which continues a horrid run for the company. Looking back over the past twelve months the stock has been a solid performer regardless, with a gain of 18%.
Although its price has dipped substantially, given about half the companies in Japan have price-to-earnings ratios (or "P/E's") above 14x, you may still consider Optimus Group as an attractive investment with its 9.8x P/E ratio. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the reduced P/E.
Recent times have been advantageous for Optimus Group as its earnings have been rising faster than most other companies. It might be that many expect the strong earnings performance to degrade substantially, which has repressed the P/E. If not, then existing shareholders have reason to be quite optimistic about the future direction of the share price.

In order to justify its P/E ratio, Optimus Group would need to produce sluggish growth that's trailing the market.
Retrospectively, the last year delivered an exceptional 19% gain to the company's bottom line. The strong recent performance means it was also able to grow EPS by 132% in total over the last three years. Therefore, it's fair to say the earnings growth recently has been superb for the company.
Shifting to the future, estimates from the only analyst covering the company suggest earnings should grow by 95% over the next year. That's shaping up to be materially higher than the 9.8% growth forecast for the broader market.
In light of this, it's peculiar that Optimus Group's P/E sits below the majority of other companies. Apparently some shareholders are doubtful of the forecasts and have been accepting significantly lower selling prices.
The Key Takeaway
Optimus Group's P/E has taken a tumble along with its share price. It's argued the price-to-earnings ratio is an inferior measure of value within certain industries, but it can be a powerful business sentiment indicator.
We've established that Optimus Group currently trades on a much lower than expected P/E since its forecast growth is higher than the wider market. When we see a strong earnings outlook with faster-than-market growth, we assume potential risks are what might be placing significant pressure on the P/E ratio. At least price risks look to be very low, but investors seem to think future earnings could see a lot of volatility.
