The board of Meiho Enterprise Co., Ltd. (TSE:8927) has announced that it will pay a dividend on the 28th of March, with investors receiving ¥5.50 per share. This will take the dividend yield to an attractive 3.8%, providing a nice boost to shareholder returns.

Meiho Enterprise's Projected Earnings Seem Likely To Cover Future Distributions

A big dividend yield for a few years doesn't mean much if it can't be sustained. Prior to this announcement, Meiho Enterprise's earnings easily covered the dividend, but free cash flows were negative. With the company not bringing in any cash, paying out to shareholders is bound to become difficult at some point.

Over the next year, EPS could expand by 51.5% if recent trends continue. Assuming the dividend continues along recent trends, we think the payout ratio could be 20% by next year, which is in a pretty sustainable range.

Meiho Enterprise Is Still Building Its Track Record

The dividend's track record has been pretty solid, but with only 7 years of history we want to see a few more years of history before making any solid conclusions. Since 2017, the dividend has gone from ¥5.00 total annually to ¥11.00. This works out to be a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of approximately 12% a year over that time. We're not overly excited about the relatively short history of dividend payments, however the dividend is growing at a nice rate and we might take a closer look.

The Dividend Looks Likely To Grow

Some investors will be chomping at the bit to buy some of the company's stock based on its dividend history. Meiho Enterprise has impressed us by growing EPS at 51% per year over the past five years. Earnings per share is growing at a solid clip, and the payout ratio is low which we think is an ideal combination in a dividend stock as the company can quite easily raise the dividend in the future.

In Summary

Overall, we always like to see the dividend being raised, but we don't think Meiho Enterprise will make a great income stock. While Meiho Enterprise is earning enough to cover the payments, the cash flows are lacking. Overall, we don't think this company has the makings of a good income stock.

Market movements attest to how highly valued a consistent dividend policy is compared to one which is more unpredictable. However, there are other things to consider for investors when analysing stock performance. To that end, Meiho Enterprise has 5 warning signs (and 2 which are potentially serious) we think you should know about.
