LA Holdings Co., Ltd. (TSE:2986) Stock's 30% Dive Might Signal An Opportunity But It Requires Some Scrutiny
Unfortunately for some shareholders, the LA Holdings Co., Ltd. (TSE:2986) share price has dived 30% in the last thirty days, prolonging recent pain. The drop over the last 30 days has capped off a tough year for shareholders, with the share price down 36% in that time.
Although its price has dipped substantially, given about half the companies in Japan have price-to-earnings ratios (or "P/E's") above 14x, you may still consider LA Holdings as a highly attractive investment with its 5.2x P/E ratio. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the highly reduced P/E.
For example, consider that LA Holdings' financial performance has been poor lately as its earnings have been in decline. It might be that many expect the disappointing earnings performance to continue or accelerate, which has repressed the P/E. If you like the company, you'd be hoping this isn't the case so that you could potentially pick up some stock while it's out of favour.

Although there are no analyst estimates available for LA Holdings, take a look at this free data-rich visualisation to see how the company stacks up on earnings, revenue and cash flow. How Is LA Holdings' Growth Trending?
LA Holdings' P/E ratio would be typical for a company that's expected to deliver very poor growth or even falling earnings, and importantly, perform much worse than the market.
Retrospectively, the last year delivered a frustrating 8.7% decrease to the company's bottom line. Even so, admirably EPS has lifted 224% in aggregate from three years ago, notwithstanding the last 12 months. Accordingly, while they would have preferred to keep the run going, shareholders would probably welcome the medium-term rates of earnings growth.
This is in contrast to the rest of the market, which is expected to grow by 9.8% over the next year, materially lower than the company's recent medium-term annualised growth rates.
With this information, we find it odd that LA Holdings is trading at a P/E lower than the market. Apparently some shareholders believe the recent performance has exceeded its limits and have been accepting significantly lower selling prices.
The Final Word
Shares in LA Holdings have plummeted and its P/E is now low enough to touch the ground. Typically, we'd caution against reading too much into price-to-earnings ratios when settling on investment decisions, though it can reveal plenty about what other market participants think about the company.
Our examination of LA Holdings revealed its three-year earnings trends aren't contributing to its P/E anywhere near as much as we would have predicted, given they look better than current market expectations. When we see strong earnings with faster-than-market growth, we assume potential risks are what might be placing significant pressure on the P/E ratio. It appears many are indeed anticipating earnings instability, because the persistence of these recent medium-term conditions would normally provide a boost to the share price.
We don't want to rain on the parade too much, but we did also find 3 warning signs for LA Holdings (1 is potentially serious!) that you need to be mindful of.
