There's Reason For Concern Over Sharingtechnology, Inc.'s (TSE:3989) Massive 28% Price Jump
Sharingtechnology, Inc. (TSE:3989) shareholders would be excited to see that the share price has had a great month, posting a 28% gain and recovering from prior weakness. Looking back a bit further, it's encouraging to see the stock is up 32% in the last year.
Since its price has surged higher, given around half the companies in Japan have price-to-earnings ratios (or "P/E's") below 13x, you may consider Sharingtechnology as a stock to potentially avoid with its 18x P/E ratio. However, the P/E might be high for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.
Sharingtechnology could be doing better as its earnings have been going backwards lately while most other companies have been seeing positive earnings growth. It might be that many expect the dour earnings performance to recover substantially, which has kept the P/E from collapsing. If not, then existing shareholders may be extremely nervous about the viability of the share price.

Keen to find out how analysts think Sharingtechnology's future stacks up against the industry? In that case, our free report is a great place to start. What Are Growth Metrics Telling Us About The High P/E?
Sharingtechnology's P/E ratio would be typical for a company that's expected to deliver solid growth, and importantly, perform better than the market.
Taking a look back first, the company's earnings per share growth last year wasn't something to get excited about as it posted a disappointing decline of 12%. Even so, admirably EPS has lifted 662% in aggregate from three years ago, notwithstanding the last 12 months. Accordingly, while they would have preferred to keep the run going, shareholders would probably welcome the medium-term rates of earnings growth.
Looking ahead now, EPS is anticipated to climb by 9.7% during the coming year according to the lone analyst following the company. That's shaping up to be materially lower than the 12% growth forecast for the broader market.
With this information, we find it concerning that Sharingtechnology is trading at a P/E higher than the market. Apparently many investors in the company are way more bullish than analysts indicate and aren't willing to let go of their stock at any price. There's a good chance these shareholders are setting themselves up for future disappointment if the P/E falls to levels more in line with the growth outlook.
What We Can Learn From Sharingtechnology's P/E?
Sharingtechnology's P/E is getting right up there since its shares have risen strongly. Generally, our preference is to limit the use of the price-to-earnings ratio to establishing what the market thinks about the overall health of a company.
Our examination of Sharingtechnology's analyst forecasts revealed that its inferior earnings outlook isn't impacting its high P/E anywhere near as much as we would have predicted. When we see a weak earnings outlook with slower than market growth, we suspect the share price is at risk of declining, sending the high P/E lower. This places shareholders' investments at significant risk and potential investors in danger of paying an excessive premium.
We don't want to rain on the parade too much, but we did also find 2 warning signs for Sharingtechnology (1 shouldn't be ignored!) that you need to be mindful of.
