What CyberStep, Inc.'s (TSE:3810) 34% Share Price Gain Is Not Telling You

CyberStep, Inc. (TSE:3810) shares have continued their recent momentum with a 34% gain in the last month alone. Looking further back, the 14% rise over the last twelve months isn't too bad notwithstanding the strength over the last 30 days.

Since its price has surged higher, you could be forgiven for thinking CyberStep is a stock not worth researching with a price-to-sales ratios (or "P/S") of 2.3x, considering almost half the companies in Japan's Entertainment industry have P/S ratios below 1.2x. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/S at face value as there may be an explanation why it's as high as it is.

How Has CyberStep Performed Recently?

For example, consider that CyberStep's financial performance has been poor lately as its revenue has been in decline. Perhaps the market believes the company can do enough to outperform the rest of the industry in the near future, which is keeping the P/S ratio high. You'd really hope so, otherwise you're paying a pretty hefty price for no particular reason.

Although there are no analyst estimates available for CyberStep, take a look at this free data-rich visualisation to see how the company stacks up on earnings, revenue and cash flow.

Do Revenue Forecasts Match The High P/S Ratio?

In order to justify its P/S ratio, CyberStep would need to produce impressive growth in excess of the industry.

Taking a look back first, the company's revenue growth last year wasn't something to get excited about as it posted a disappointing decline of 20%. As a result, revenue from three years ago have also fallen 72% overall. So unfortunately, we have to acknowledge that the company has not done a great job of growing revenue over that time.

Weighing that medium-term revenue trajectory against the broader industry's one-year forecast for expansion of 24% shows it's an unpleasant look.

With this information, we find it concerning that CyberStep is trading at a P/S higher than the industry. It seems most investors are ignoring the recent poor growth rate and are hoping for a turnaround in the company's business prospects. Only the boldest would assume these prices are sustainable as a continuation of recent revenue trends is likely to weigh heavily on the share price eventually.

The Key Takeaway

CyberStep's P/S is on the rise since its shares have risen strongly. While the price-to-sales ratio shouldn't be the defining factor in whether you buy a stock or not, it's quite a capable barometer of revenue expectations.

We've established that CyberStep currently trades on a much higher than expected P/S since its recent revenues have been in decline over the medium-term. When we see revenue heading backwards and underperforming the industry forecasts, we feel the possibility of the share price declining is very real, bringing the P/S back into the realm of reasonability. Should recent medium-term revenue trends persist, it would pose a significant risk to existing shareholders' investments and prospective investors will have a hard time accepting the current value of the stock.
