Cookpad (TSE:2193) adds JP¥3.5b to market cap in the past 7 days, though investors from three years ago are still down 40%
Cookpad Inc. (TSE:2193) shareholders are doubtless heartened to see the share price bounce 32% in just one week. But that cannot eclipse the less-than-impressive returns over the last three years. After all, the share price is down 40% in the last three years, significantly under-performing the market.
While the stock has risen 32% in the past week but long term shareholders are still in the red, let's see what the fundamentals can tell us.
While the efficient markets hypothesis continues to be taught by some, it has been proven that markets are over-reactive dynamic systems, and investors are not always rational. One way to examine how market sentiment has changed over time is to look at the interaction between a company's share price and its earnings per share (EPS).
Cookpad became profitable within the last five years. That would generally be considered a positive, so we are surprised to see the share price is down. So given the share price is down it's worth checking some other metrics too.
Arguably the revenue decline of 18% per year has people thinking Cookpad is shrinking. After all, if revenue keeps shrinking, it may be difficult to find earnings growth in the future.
The image below shows how earnings and revenue have tracked over time (if you click on the image you can see greater detail).

A Different Perspective
Investors in Cookpad had a tough year, with a total loss of 5.4%, against a market gain of about 2.3%. However, keep in mind that even the best stocks will sometimes underperform the market over a twelve month period. Unfortunately, longer term shareholders are suffering worse, given the loss of 7% doled out over the last five years. We would want clear information suggesting the company will grow, before taking the view that the share price will stabilize. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important. To that end, you should learn about the 2 warning signs we've spotted with Cookpad (including 1 which can't be ignored) .
