Cookpad Inc. (TSE:2193) Stock Rockets 41% As Investors Are Less Pessimistic Than Expected
Despite an already strong run, Cookpad Inc. (TSE:2193) shares have been powering on, with a gain of 41% in the last thirty days. Not all shareholders will be feeling jubilant, since the share price is still down a very disappointing 11% in the last twelve months.
After such a large jump in price, given close to half the companies operating in Japan's Interactive Media and Services industry have price-to-sales ratios (or "P/S") below 1.7x, you may consider Cookpad as a stock to potentially avoid with its 2.3x P/S ratio. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/S at face value as there may be an explanation why it's as high as it is.

What Does Cookpad's Recent Performance Look Like?
For instance, Cookpad's receding revenue in recent times would have to be some food for thought. Perhaps the market believes the company can do enough to outperform the rest of the industry in the near future, which is keeping the P/S ratio high. You'd really hope so, otherwise you're paying a pretty hefty price for no particular reason.

In order to justify its P/S ratio, Cookpad would need to produce impressive growth in excess of the industry.
Retrospectively, the last year delivered a frustrating 16% decrease to the company's top line. This means it has also seen a slide in revenue over the longer-term as revenue is down 31% in total over the last three years. So unfortunately, we have to acknowledge that the company has not done a great job of growing revenue over that time.
In contrast to the company, the rest of the industry is expected to grow by 12% over the next year, which really puts the company's recent medium-term revenue decline into perspective.
With this information, we find it concerning that Cookpad is trading at a P/S higher than the industry. Apparently many investors in the company are way more bullish than recent times would indicate and aren't willing to let go of their stock at any price. There's a very good chance existing shareholders are setting themselves up for future disappointment if the P/S falls to levels more in line with the recent negative growth rates.
The Bottom Line On Cookpad's P/S
Cookpad's P/S is on the rise since its shares have risen strongly. Generally, our preference is to limit the use of the price-to-sales ratio to establishing what the market thinks about the overall health of a company.
Our examination of Cookpad revealed its shrinking revenue over the medium-term isn't resulting in a P/S as low as we expected, given the industry is set to grow. When we see revenue heading backwards and underperforming the industry forecasts, we feel the possibility of the share price declining is very real, bringing the P/S back into the realm of reasonability. If recent medium-term revenue trends continue, it will place shareholders' investments at significant risk and potential investors in danger of paying an excessive premium.
