LIFULL Co.,Ltd. (TSE:2120) shareholders have had their patience rewarded with a 27% share price jump in the last month. The bad news is that even after the stocks recovery in the last 30 days, shareholders are still underwater by about 8.7% over the last year.

Even after such a large jump in price, given about half the companies operating in Japan's Interactive Media and Services industry have price-to-sales ratios (or "P/S") above 1.5x, you may still consider LIFULLLtd as an attractive investment with its 0.7x P/S ratio. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/S at face value as there may be an explanation why it's limited.

What Does LIFULLLtd's P/S Mean For Shareholders?

LIFULLLtd could be doing better as its revenue has been going backwards lately while most other companies have been seeing positive revenue growth. Perhaps the P/S remains low as investors think the prospects of strong revenue growth aren't on the horizon. So while you could say the stock is cheap, investors will be looking for improvement before they see it as good value.

What Are Revenue Growth Metrics Telling Us About The Low P/S?

In order to justify its P/S ratio, LIFULLLtd would need to produce sluggish growth that's trailing the industry.

In reviewing the last year of financials, we were disheartened to see the company's revenues fell to the tune of 5.3%. As a result, revenue from three years ago have also fallen 3.9% overall. Therefore, it's fair to say the revenue growth recently has been undesirable for the company.

Shifting to the future, estimates from the sole analyst covering the company suggest revenue should grow by 1.5% over the next year. Meanwhile, the rest of the industry is forecast to expand by 9.4%, which is noticeably more attractive.

In light of this, it's understandable that LIFULLLtd's P/S sits below the majority of other companies. Apparently many shareholders weren't comfortable holding on while the company is potentially eyeing a less prosperous future.

The Bottom Line On LIFULLLtd's P/S

The latest share price surge wasn't enough to lift LIFULLLtd's P/S close to the industry median. While the price-to-sales ratio shouldn't be the defining factor in whether you buy a stock or not, it's quite a capable barometer of revenue expectations.

We've established that LIFULLLtd maintains its low P/S on the weakness of its forecast growth being lower than the wider industry, as expected. Right now shareholders are accepting the low P/S as they concede future revenue probably won't provide any pleasant surprises. The company will need a change of fortune to justify the P/S rising higher in the future.
