UBE's (TSE:4208) Dividend Will Be ¥55.00

UBE Corporation (TSE:4208) has announced that it will pay a dividend of ¥55.00 per share on the 29th of June. Based on this payment, the dividend yield on the company's stock will be 4.5%, which is an attractive boost to shareholder returns.

UBE's Future Dividends May Potentially Be At Risk

A big dividend yield for a few years doesn't mean much if it can't be sustained. Prior to this announcement, the company was paying out 186% of what it was earning. Without profits and cash flows increasing, it would be difficult for the company to continue paying the dividend at this level.

Earnings per share is forecast to rise by 17.8% over the next year. Assuming the dividend continues along recent trends, we think the payout ratio could reach 170%, which probably can't continue without putting some pressure on the balance sheet.

Dividend Volatility

The company has a long dividend track record, but it doesn't look great with cuts in the past. Since 2015, the dividend has gone from ¥50.00 total annually to ¥110.00. This means that it has been growing its distributions at 8.2% per annum over that time. It's good to see the dividend growing at a decent rate, but the dividend has been cut at least once in the past. UBE might have put its house in order since then, but we remain cautious.

Dividend Growth Potential Is Shaky

With a relatively unstable dividend, it's even more important to evaluate if earnings per share is growing, which could point to a growing dividend in the future. UBE's EPS has fallen by approximately 14% per year during the past five years. A sharp decline in earnings per share is not great from from a dividend perspective. Even conservative payout ratios can come under pressure if earnings fall far enough. On the bright side, earnings are predicted to gain some ground over the next year, but until this turns into a pattern we wouldn't be feeling too comfortable.

We're Not Big Fans Of UBE's Dividend

Overall, while some might be pleased that the dividend wasn't cut, we think this may help UBE make more consistent payments in the future. The company isn't making enough to be paying as much as it is, and the other factors don't look particularly promising either. Overall, this doesn't get us very excited from an income standpoint.

Companies possessing a stable dividend policy will likely enjoy greater investor interest than those suffering from a more inconsistent approach. At the same time, there are other factors our readers should be conscious of before pouring capital into a stock.
