The total return for Tokyo Ohka Kogyo (TSE:4186) investors has risen faster than earnings growth over the last five years
It hasn't been the best quarter for Tokyo Ohka Kogyo Co., Ltd. (TSE:4186) shareholders, since the share price has fallen 17% in that time. But that doesn't change the fact that the returns over the last five years have been very strong. Indeed, the share price is up an impressive 149% in that time. So while it's never fun to see a share price fall, it's important to look at a longer time horizon. Only time will tell if there is still too much optimism currently reflected in the share price.
In light of the stock dropping 3.5% in the past week, we want to investigate the longer term story, and see if fundamentals have been the driver of the company's positive five-year return.

There is no denying that markets are sometimes efficient, but prices do not always reflect underlying business performance. One way to examine how market sentiment has changed over time is to look at the interaction between a company's share price and its earnings per share (EPS).
Over half a decade, Tokyo Ohka Kogyo managed to grow its earnings per share at 21% a year. This EPS growth is remarkably close to the 20% average annual increase in the share price. Therefore one could conclude that sentiment towards the shares hasn't morphed very much. Indeed, it would appear the share price is reacting to the EPS.

What About Dividends?
It is important to consider the total shareholder return, as well as the share price return, for any given stock. Whereas the share price return only reflects the change in the share price, the TSR includes the value of dividends (assuming they were reinvested) and the benefit of any discounted capital raising or spin-off. So for companies that pay a generous dividend, the TSR is often a lot higher than the share price return. As it happens, Tokyo Ohka Kogyo's TSR for the last 5 years was 178%, which exceeds the share price return mentioned earlier. This is largely a result of its dividend payments!
A Different Perspective
Tokyo Ohka Kogyo shareholders have received returns of 21% over twelve months (even including dividends), which isn't far from the general market return. It has to be noted that the recent return falls short of the 23% shareholders have gained each year, over half a decade. More recently, the share price growth has slowed. But it has to be said the overall picture is one of good long term and short term performance. Arguably that makes Tokyo Ohka Kogyo a stock worth watching. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too.
