We Think HABA LaboratoriesInc's (TSE:4925) Solid Earnings Are Understated
The market seemed underwhelmed by last week's earnings announcement from HABA Laboratories,Inc. (TSE:4925) despite the healthy numbers. Our analysis suggests that shareholders might be missing some positive underlying factors in the earnings report.
Examining Cashflow Against HABA LaboratoriesInc's Earnings
Many investors haven't heard of the accrual ratio from cashflow, but it is actually a useful measure of how well a company's profit is backed up by free cash flow (FCF) during a given period. To get the accrual ratio we first subtract FCF from profit for a period, and then divide that number by the average operating assets for the period. This ratio tells us how much of a company's profit is not backed by free cashflow.
Therefore, it's actually considered a good thing when a company has a negative accrual ratio, but a bad thing if its accrual ratio is positive. That is not intended to imply we should worry about a positive accrual ratio, but it's worth noting where the accrual ratio is rather high. To quote a 2014 paper by Lewellen and Resutek, "firms with higher accruals tend to be less profitable in the future".
Over the twelve months to March 2025, HABA LaboratoriesInc recorded an accrual ratio of -0.13. That implies it has good cash conversion, and implies that its free cash flow solidly exceeded its profit last year. In fact, it had free cash flow of JP¥1.4b in the last year, which was a lot more than its statutory profit of JP¥576.0m. Notably, HABA LaboratoriesInc had negative free cash flow last year, so the JP¥1.4b it produced this year was a welcome improvement.
