Medical Data Vision Co., Ltd. (TSE:3902) Stocks Shoot Up 25% But Its P/E Still Looks Reasonable
Medical Data Vision Co., Ltd. (TSE:3902) shareholders are no doubt pleased to see that the share price has bounced 25% in the last month, although it is still struggling to make up recently lost ground. Not all shareholders will be feeling jubilant, since the share price is still down a very disappointing 19% in the last twelve months.
After such a large jump in price, Medical Data Vision may be sending very bearish signals at the moment with a price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 32.2x, since almost half of all companies in Japan have P/E ratios under 14x and even P/E's lower than 9x are not unusual. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/E at face value as there may be an explanation why it's so lofty.
While the market has experienced earnings growth lately, Medical Data Vision's earnings have gone into reverse gear, which is not great. It might be that many expect the dour earnings performance to recover substantially, which has kept the P/E from collapsing. If not, then existing shareholders may be extremely nervous about the viability of the share price.

The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/E as steep as Medical Data Vision's is when the company's growth is on track to outshine the market decidedly.
Taking a look back first, the company's earnings per share growth last year wasn't something to get excited about as it posted a disappointing decline of 17%. As a result, earnings from three years ago have also fallen 17% overall. Therefore, it's fair to say the earnings growth recently has been undesirable for the company.
Turning to the outlook, the next three years should generate growth of 29% per year as estimated by the only analyst watching the company. Meanwhile, the rest of the market is forecast to only expand by 9.6% per year, which is noticeably less attractive.
In light of this, it's understandable that Medical Data Vision's P/E sits above the majority of other companies. It seems most investors are expecting this strong future growth and are willing to pay more for the stock.
The Bottom Line On Medical Data Vision's P/E
Shares in Medical Data Vision have built up some good momentum lately, which has really inflated its P/E. While the price-to-earnings ratio shouldn't be the defining factor in whether you buy a stock or not, it's quite a capable barometer of earnings expectations.
As we suspected, our examination of Medical Data Vision's analyst forecasts revealed that its superior earnings outlook is contributing to its high P/E. At this stage investors feel the potential for a deterioration in earnings isn't great enough to justify a lower P/E ratio. Unless these conditions change, they will continue to provide strong support to the share price.
