Investors in Yakult HonshaLtd (TSE:2267) have unfortunately lost 19% over the last three years

In order to justify the effort of selecting individual stocks, it's worth striving to beat the returns from a market index fund. But its virtually certain that sometimes you will buy stocks that fall short of the market average returns. We regret to report that long term Yakult Honsha Co.,Ltd. (TSE:2267) shareholders have had that experience, with the share price dropping 23% in three years, versus a market return of about 54%.

Now let's have a look at the company's fundamentals, and see if the long term shareholder return has matched the performance of the underlying business.

To quote Buffett, 'Ships will sail around the world but the Flat Earth Society will flourish. There will continue to be wide discrepancies between price and value in the marketplace...' One way to examine how market sentiment has changed over time is to look at the interaction between a company's share price and its earnings per share (EPS).

Although the share price is down over three years, Yakult HonshaLtd actually managed to grow EPS by 3.4% per year in that time. Given the share price reaction, one might suspect that EPS is not a good guide to the business performance during the period (perhaps due to a one-off loss or gain). Alternatively, growth expectations may have been unreasonable in the past.

It looks to us like the market was probably too optimistic around growth three years ago. But it's possible a look at other metrics will be enlightening.

We note that, in three years, revenue has actually grown at a 5.8% annual rate, so that doesn't seem to be a reason to sell shares. This analysis is just perfunctory, but it might be worth researching Yakult HonshaLtd more closely, as sometimes stocks fall unfairly. This could present an opportunity.

What About Dividends?

When looking at investment returns, it is important to consider the difference between total shareholder return (TSR) and share price return. The TSR incorporates the value of any spin-offs or discounted capital raisings, along with any dividends, based on the assumption that the dividends are reinvested. So for companies that pay a generous dividend, the TSR is often a lot higher than the share price return. We note that for Yakult HonshaLtd the TSR over the last 3 years was -19%, which is better than the share price return mentioned above. And there's no prize for guessing that the dividend payments largely explain the divergence!

A Different Perspective

We're pleased to report that Yakult HonshaLtd shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 4.4% over one year. And that does include the dividend. There's no doubt those recent returns are much better than the TSR loss of 1.4% per year over five years. The long term loss makes us cautious, but the short term TSR gain certainly hints at a brighter future. Is Yakult HonshaLtd cheap compared to other companies? These 3 valuation measures might help you decide.
