Some have more dollars than sense, they say, so even companies that have no revenue, no profit, and a record of falling short, can easily find investors. Unfortunately, high risk investments often have little probability of ever paying off, and many investors pay a price to learn their lesson.

In the age of tech-stock blue-sky investing, my choice may seem old fashioned; I still prefer profitable companies like Akikawa Foods & Farms (TYO:1380). While profit is not necessarily a social good, it's easy to admire a business that can consistently produce it. Conversely, a loss-making company is yet to prove itself with profit, and eventually the sweet milk of external capital may run sour.

Akikawa Foods & Farms's Earnings Per Share Are Growing.

As one of my mentors once told me, share price follows earnings per share (EPS). That makes EPS growth an attractive quality for any company. As a tree reaches steadily for the sky, Akikawa Foods & Farms's EPS has grown 34% each year, compound, over three years. As a general rule, we'd say that if a company can keep up that sort of growth, shareholders will be smiling.

One way to double-check a company's growth is to look at how its revenue, and earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) margins are changing. The good news is that Akikawa Foods & Farms is growing revenues, and EBIT margins improved by 2.5 percentage points to 4.0%, over the last year. Ticking those two boxes is a good sign of growth, in my book.

Akikawa Foods & Farms isn't a huge company, given its market capitalization of JP¥4.9b. That makes it extra important to check on its balance sheet strength.

Are Akikawa Foods & Farms Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?

Personally, I like to see high insider ownership of a company, since it suggests that it will be managed in the interests of shareholders. So we're pleased to report that Akikawa Foods & Farms insiders own a meaningful share of the business. Actually, with 49% of the company to their names, insiders are profoundly invested in the business. I'm reassured by this kind of alignment, as it suggests the business will be run for the benefit of shareholders. With that sort of holding, insiders have about JP¥2.4b riding on the stock, at current prices. That should be more than enough to keep them focussed on creating shareholder value!

Is Akikawa Foods & Farms Worth Keeping An Eye On?

You can't deny that Akikawa Foods & Farms has grown its earnings per share at a very impressive rate. That's attractive. Further, the high level of insider ownership impresses me, and suggests that I'm not the only one who appreciates the EPS growth. Fast growth and confident insiders should be enough to warrant further research. So the answer is that I do think this is a good stock to follow along with. You still need to take note of risks, for example - Akikawa Foods & Farms has 2 warning signs we think you should be aware of.

Although Akikawa Foods & Farms certainly looks good to me, I would like it more if insiders were buying up shares. If you like to see insider buying, too, then this free list of growing companies that insiders are buying, could be exactly what you're looking for.
