Nagaoka International's (TSE:6239) Shareholders Will Receive A Bigger Dividend Than Last Year
The board of Nagaoka International Corporation (TSE:6239) has announced that it will be increasing its dividend by 30% on the 29th of September to ¥30.00, up from last year's comparable payment of ¥23.00. Even though the dividend went up, the yield is still quite low at only 1.7%.
While the dividend yield is important for income investors, it is also important to consider any large share price moves, as this will generally outweigh any gains from distributions. Investors will be pleased to see that Nagaoka International's stock price has increased by 31% in the last 3 months, which is good for shareholders and can also explain a decrease in the dividend yield.

Nagaoka International's Earnings Easily Cover The Distributions
Even a low dividend yield can be attractive if it is sustained for years on end. Before making this announcement, Nagaoka International was easily earning enough to cover the dividend. As a result, a large proportion of what it earned was being reinvested back into the business.
If the trend of the last few years continues, EPS will grow by 40.0% over the next 12 months. If the dividend continues along recent trends, we estimate the payout ratio will be 18%, which is in the range that makes us comfortable with the sustainability of the dividend.
Nagaoka International Doesn't Have A Long Payment History
Looking back, the dividend has been stable, but the company hasn't been paying a dividend for very long so we can't be confident that the dividend will remain stable through all economic environments. Since 2020, the dividend has gone from ¥7.00 total annually to ¥23.00. This means that it has been growing its distributions at 35% per annum over that time. It is always nice to see strong dividend growth, but with such a short payment history we wouldn't be inclined to rely on it until a longer track record can be developed.
The Dividend Looks Likely To Grow
Investors could be attracted to the stock based on the quality of its payment history. We are encouraged to see that Nagaoka International has grown earnings per share at 40% per year over the past five years. A low payout ratio gives the company a lot of flexibility, and growing earnings also make it very easy for it to grow the dividend.
We Really Like Nagaoka International's Dividend
In summary, it is always positive to see the dividend being increased, and we are particularly pleased with its overall sustainability. The company is easily earning enough to cover its dividend payments and it is great to see that these earnings are being translated into cash flow. All in all, this checks a lot of the boxes we look for when choosing an income stock.
Market movements attest to how highly valued a consistent dividend policy is compared to one which is more unpredictable. Still, investors need to consider a host of other factors, apart from dividend payments, when analysing a company.
