Estimates Indicate Matsui Securities' Could Struggle to Maintain Dividend Payments In The Future
A big dividend yield for a few years doesn't mean much if it can't be sustained. Prior to this announcement, the company was paying out 118% of what it was earning, however the dividend was quite comfortably covered by free cash flows at a cash payout ratio of only . Healthy cash flows are always a positive sign, especially when they quite easily cover the dividend.
Earnings per share is forecast to rise by 8.4% over the next year. If the dividend continues on its recent course, the payout ratio in 12 months could be 109%, which is a bit high and could start applying pressure to the balance sheet.
Matsui Securities' Dividend Has Lacked Consistency
Matsui Securities has been paying dividends for a while, but the track record isn't stellar. This makes us cautious about the consistency of the dividend over a full economic cycle. The annual payment during the last 5 years was ¥45.00 in 2020, and the most recent fiscal year payment was ¥44.00. Dividend payments have shrunk at a rate of less than 1% per annum over this time frame. Declining dividends isn't generally what we look for as they can indicate that the company is running into some challenges.
Matsui Securities May Find It Hard To Grow The Dividend
Growing earnings per share could be a mitigating factor when considering the past fluctuations in the dividend. Although it's important to note that Matsui Securities' earnings per share has basically not grown from where it was five years ago, which could erode the purchasing power of the dividend over time.
The Dividend Could Prove To Be Unreliable
Overall, it's not great to see that the dividend has been cut, but this might be explained by the payments being a bit high previously. The company is generating plenty of cash, which could maintain the dividend for a while, but the track record hasn't been great. This company is not in the top tier of income providing stocks.
Investors generally tend to favour companies with a consistent, stable dividend policy as opposed to those operating an irregular one.
