AIAI Group's (TSE:6557) Performance Is Even Better Than Its Earnings Suggest
AIAI Group Corporation (TSE:6557) just reported healthy earnings but the stock price didn't move much. Our analysis suggests that investors might be missing some promising details.
One essential aspect of assessing earnings quality is to look at how much a company is diluting shareholders. AIAI Group expanded the number of shares on issue by 6.5% over the last year. That means its earnings are split among a greater number of shares. To talk about net income, without noticing earnings per share, is to be distracted by the big numbers while ignoring the smaller numbers that talk to per share value. You can see a chart of AIAI Group's EPS by clicking here.
A Look At The Impact Of AIAI Group's Dilution On Its Earnings Per Share (EPS)
As it happens, we don't know how much the company made or lost three years ago, because we don't have the data. On the bright side, in the last twelve months it grew profit by 19%. But EPS was less impressive, up only 14% in that time. And so, you can see quite clearly that dilution is influencing shareholder earnings.
Changes in the share price do tend to reflect changes in earnings per share, in the long run. So it will certainly be a positive for shareholders if AIAI Group can grow EPS persistently. But on the other hand, we'd be far less excited to learn profit (but not EPS) was improving. For the ordinary retail shareholder, EPS is a great measure to check your hypothetical "share" of the company's profit.

How Do Unusual Items Influence Profit?
On top of the dilution, we should also consider the JP¥303m impact of unusual items in the last year, which had the effect of suppressing profit. While deductions due to unusual items are disappointing in the first instance, there is a silver lining. When we analysed the vast majority of listed companies worldwide, we found that significant unusual items are often not repeated. And that's hardly a surprise given these line items are considered unusual. AIAI Group took a rather significant hit from unusual items in the year to March 2025. All else being equal, this would likely have the effect of making the statutory profit look worse than its underlying earnings power.
Our Take On AIAI Group's Profit Performance
To sum it all up, AIAI Group took a hit from unusual items which pushed its profit down; without that, it would have made more money. But unfortunately the dilution means that shareholders now own a smaller proportion of the company (assuming they maintained the same number of shares). That will weigh on earnings per share, even if it is not reflected in net income. Considering all the aforementioned, we'd venture that AIAI Group's profit result is a pretty good guide to its true profitability, albeit a bit on the conservative side. In light of this, if you'd like to do more analysis on the company, it's vital to be informed of the risks involved.
