COSMOS Pharmaceutical Corporation's (TSE:3349) Stock On An Uptrend: Could Fundamentals Be Driving The Momentum?
Most readers would already be aware that COSMOS Pharmaceutical's (TSE:3349) stock increased significantly by 18% over the past three months. As most would know, fundamentals are what usually guide market price movements over the long-term, so we decided to look at the company's key financial indicators today to determine if they have any role to play in the recent price movement. Particularly, we will be paying attention to COSMOS Pharmaceutical's ROE today.
Return on equity or ROE is an important factor to be considered by a shareholder because it tells them how effectively their capital is being reinvested. In short, ROE shows the profit each dollar generates with respect to its shareholder investments.
How Do You Calculate Return On Equity?
The formula for ROE is:
Return on Equity = Net Profit (from continuing operations) ÷ Shareholders' Equity
So, based on the above formula, the ROE for COSMOS Pharmaceutical is:
11% = JP¥27b ÷ JP¥243b (Based on the trailing twelve months to November 2024).
The 'return' refers to a company's earnings over the last year. So, this means that for every ¥1 of its shareholder's investments, the company generates a profit of ¥0.11.

Why Is ROE Important For Earnings Growth?
We have already established that ROE serves as an efficient profit-generating gauge for a company's future earnings. Based on how much of its profits the company chooses to reinvest or "retain", we are then able to evaluate a company's future ability to generate profits. Generally speaking, other things being equal, firms with a high return on equity and profit retention, have a higher growth rate than firms that don’t share these attributes.
COSMOS Pharmaceutical's Earnings Growth And 11% ROE
To start with, COSMOS Pharmaceutical's ROE looks acceptable. Further, the company's ROE compares quite favorably to the industry average of 9.3%. However, for some reason, the higher returns aren't reflected in COSMOS Pharmaceutical's meagre five year net income growth average of 2.3%. This is interesting as the high returns should mean that the company has the ability to generate high growth but for some reason, it hasn't been able to do so. A few likely reasons why this could happen is that the company could have a high payout ratio or the business has allocated capital poorly, for instance.
Next, on comparing with the industry net income growth, we found that COSMOS Pharmaceutical's reported growth was lower than the industry growth of 10% over the last few years, which is not something we like to see.
Earnings growth is a huge factor in stock valuation. It’s important for an investor to know whether the market has priced in the company's expected earnings growth (or decline). This then helps them determine if the stock is placed for a bright or bleak future. Is COSMOS Pharmaceutical fairly valued compared to other companies? These 3 valuation measures might help you decide.
Is COSMOS Pharmaceutical Using Its Retained Earnings Effectively?
COSMOS Pharmaceutical's low three-year median payout ratio of 17% (or a retention ratio of 83%) should mean that the company is retaining most of its earnings to fuel its growth. This should be reflected in its earnings growth number, but that's not the case. Therefore, there might be some other reasons to explain the lack in that respect. For example, the business could be in decline.
Additionally, COSMOS Pharmaceutical has paid dividends over a period of at least ten years, which means that the company's management is determined to pay dividends even if it means little to no earnings growth.
Summary
In total, it does look like COSMOS Pharmaceutical has some positive aspects to its business. Although, we are disappointed to see a lack of growth in earnings even in spite of a high ROE and and a high reinvestment rate. We believe that there might be some outside factors that could be having a negative impact on the business. That being so, the latest analyst forecasts show that the company will continue to see an expansion in its earnings.
