First Juken Co., Ltd. (TSE:8917) has announced that it will pay a dividend of ¥21.00 per share on the 19th of July. This means the annual payment is 4.0% of the current stock price, which is above the average for the industry.

First Juken's Payment Has Solid Earnings Coverage

We like to see robust dividend yields, but that doesn't matter if the payment isn't sustainable. However, prior to this announcement, First Juken's dividend was comfortably covered by both cash flow and earnings. This means that most of what the business earns is being used to help it grow.

EPS is set to fall by 9.5% over the next 12 months if recent trends continue. If the dividend continues along the path it has been on recently, we estimate the payout ratio could be 42%, which is definitely feasible to continue.

First Juken Doesn't Have A Long Payment History

First Juken's dividend has been pretty stable for a little while now, but we will continue to be cautious until it has been demonstrated for a few more years. There hasn't been much of a change in the dividend over the last 6 years. First Juken hasn't been paying a dividend for very long, so we wouldn't get to excited about its record of growth just yet.

Dividend Growth May Be Hard To Come By

Investors who have held shares in the company for the past few years will be happy with the dividend income they have received. Let's not jump to conclusions as things might not be as good as they appear on the surface. First Juken has seen earnings per share falling at 9.5% per year over the last five years. If the company is making less over time, it naturally follows that it will also have to pay out less in dividends.

Our Thoughts On First Juken's Dividend

Overall, we don't think this company makes a great dividend stock, even though the dividend wasn't cut this year. The company is generating plenty of cash, which could maintain the dividend for a while, but the track record hasn't been great. We don't think First Juken is a great stock to add to your portfolio if income is your focus.

It's important to note that companies having a consistent dividend policy will generate greater investor confidence than those having an erratic one. However, there are other things to consider for investors when analysing stock performance.
