Nikon (TSE:7731) Has Announced A Dividend Of ¥25.00

The board of Nikon Corporation (TSE:7731) has announced that it will pay a dividend on the 30th of June, with investors receiving ¥25.00 per share. This makes the dividend yield 2.8%, which will augment investor returns quite nicely.

Estimates Indicate Nikon's Could Struggle to Maintain Dividend Payments In The Future

While it is great to have a strong dividend yield, we should also consider whether the payment is sustainable. Before this announcement, Nikon was paying out 196% of what it was earning, and not generating any free cash flows either. This high of a dividend payment could start to put pressure on the balance sheet in the future.

Over the next year, EPS is forecast to expand by 44.4%. Assuming the dividend continues along recent trends, we think the payout ratio could reach 142%, which probably can't continue without putting some pressure on the balance sheet.

Dividend Volatility

Although the company has a long dividend history, it has been cut at least once in the last 10 years. Since 2015, the annual payment back then was ¥16.00, compared to the most recent full-year payment of ¥50.00. This works out to be a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of approximately 12% a year over that time. Nikon has grown distributions at a rapid rate despite cutting the dividend at least once in the past. Companies that cut once often cut again, so we would be cautious about buying this stock solely for the dividend income.

Nikon's Dividend Might Lack Growth

With a relatively unstable dividend, it's even more important to see if earnings per share is growing. We are encouraged to see that Nikon has grown earnings per share at 25% per year over the past five years. While EPS is growing rapidly, Nikon paid out a very high 196% of its income as dividends. If earnings continue to grow, this dividend may be sustainable, but we think a payout this high definitely bears watching.

Nikon's Dividend Doesn't Look Sustainable

Overall, we don't think this company makes a great dividend stock, even though the dividend wasn't cut this year. While we generally think the level of distributions are a bit high, we wouldn't rule it out as becoming a good dividend payer in the future as its earnings are growing healthily. We would probably look elsewhere for an income investment.

Companies possessing a stable dividend policy will likely enjoy greater investor interest than those suffering from a more inconsistent approach.
