TRYT Inc. (TSE:9164) shares have continued their recent momentum with a 26% gain in the last month alone. Not all shareholders will be feeling jubilant, since the share price is still down a very disappointing 19% in the last twelve months.

In spite of the firm bounce in price, there still wouldn't be many who think TRYT's price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 13.5x is worth a mention when the median P/E in Japan is similar at about 13x. Although, it's not wise to simply ignore the P/E without explanation as investors may be disregarding a distinct opportunity or a costly mistake.

While the market has experienced earnings growth lately, TRYT's earnings have gone into reverse gear, which is not great. It might be that many expect the dour earnings performance to strengthen positively, which has kept the P/E from falling. You'd really hope so, otherwise you're paying a relatively elevated price for a company with this sort of growth profile.

Does Growth Match The P/E?

In order to justify its P/E ratio, TRYT would need to produce growth that's similar to the market.

Taking a look back first, the company's earnings per share growth last year wasn't something to get excited about as it posted a disappointing decline of 23%. At least EPS has managed not to go completely backwards from three years ago in aggregate, thanks to the earlier period of growth. Accordingly, shareholders probably wouldn't have been overly satisfied with the unstable medium-term growth rates.

Turning to the outlook, the next year should generate growth of 14% as estimated by the four analysts watching the company. That's shaping up to be materially higher than the 11% growth forecast for the broader market.

In light of this, it's curious that TRYT's P/E sits in line with the majority of other companies. Apparently some shareholders are skeptical of the forecasts and have been accepting lower selling prices.

The Bottom Line On TRYT's P/E

TRYT appears to be back in favour with a solid price jump getting its P/E back in line with most other companies. Typically, we'd caution against reading too much into price-to-earnings ratios when settling on investment decisions, though it can reveal plenty about what other market participants think about the company.

Our examination of TRYT's analyst forecasts revealed that its superior earnings outlook isn't contributing to its P/E as much as we would have predicted. When we see a strong earnings outlook with faster-than-market growth, we assume potential risks are what might be placing pressure on the P/E ratio. At least the risk of a price drop looks to be subdued, but investors seem to think future earnings could see some volatility.

There are also other vital risk factors to consider and we've discovered 3 warning signs for TRYT (1 makes us a bit uncomfortable!) that you should be aware of before investing here.
