There are a few key trends to look for if we want to identify the next multi-bagger. Firstly, we'd want to identify a growing return on capital employed (ROCE) and then alongside that, an ever-increasing base of capital employed. This shows us that it's a compounding machine, able to continually reinvest its earnings back into the business and generate higher returns. In light of that, when we looked at SUSLtd (TSE:6554) and its ROCE trend, we weren't exactly thrilled.
What Is Return On Capital Employed (ROCE)?
If you haven't worked with ROCE before, it measures the 'return' (pre-tax profit) a company generates from capital employed in its business. Analysts use this formula to calculate it for SUSLtd:
Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)
0.19 = JP¥663m ÷ (JP¥6.0b - JP¥2.5b) (Based on the trailing twelve months to June 2024).
So, SUSLtd has an ROCE of 19%. On its own, that's a standard return, however it's much better than the 15% generated by the Professional Services industry.

So How Is SUSLtd's ROCE Trending?
In terms of SUSLtd's historical ROCE movements, the trend isn't fantastic. Around five years ago the returns on capital were 26%, but since then they've fallen to 19%. Although, given both revenue and the amount of assets employed in the business have increased, it could suggest the company is investing in growth, and the extra capital has led to a short-term reduction in ROCE. And if the increased capital generates additional returns, the business, and thus shareholders, will benefit in the long run.
Another thing to note, SUSLtd has a high ratio of current liabilities to total assets of 42%. This can bring about some risks because the company is basically operating with a rather large reliance on its suppliers or other sorts of short-term creditors. Ideally we'd like to see this reduce as that would mean fewer obligations bearing risks.
The Bottom Line On SUSLtd's ROCE
Even though returns on capital have fallen in the short term, we find it promising that revenue and capital employed have both increased for SUSLtd. Furthermore the stock has climbed 65% over the last five years, it would appear that investors are upbeat about the future. So while investors seem to be recognizing these promising trends, we would look further into this stock to make sure the other metrics justify the positive view.
Like most companies, SUSLtd does come with some risks, and we've found 1 warning sign that you should be aware of.
