Aqualine Ltd. (TSE:6173) Shares May Have Slumped 27% But Getting In Cheap Is Still Unlikely
The Aqualine Ltd. (TSE:6173) share price has fared very poorly over the last month, falling by a substantial 27%. The recent drop completes a disastrous twelve months for shareholders, who are sitting on a 54% loss during that time.
In spite of the heavy fall in price, there still wouldn't be many who think Aqualine's price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 0.2x is worth a mention when the median P/S in Japan's Commercial Services industry is similar at about 0.6x. While this might not raise any eyebrows, if the P/S ratio is not justified investors could be missing out on a potential opportunity or ignoring looming disappointment.

What Does Aqualine's P/S Mean For Shareholders?
Aqualine has been doing a decent job lately as it's been growing revenue at a reasonable pace. It might be that many expect the respectable revenue performance to only match most other companies over the coming period, which has kept the P/S from rising. If not, then at least existing shareholders probably aren't too pessimistic about the future direction of the share price.
We don't have analyst forecasts, but you can see how recent trends are setting up the company for the future by checking out our free report on Aqualine's earnings, revenue and cash flow.Is There Some Revenue Growth Forecasted For Aqualine?
In order to justify its P/S ratio, Aqualine would need to produce growth that's similar to the industry.
If we review the last year of revenue growth, the company posted a worthy increase of 2.6%. However, this wasn't enough as the latest three year period has seen an unpleasant 25% overall drop in revenue. Therefore, it's fair to say the revenue growth recently has been undesirable for the company.
In contrast to the company, the rest of the industry is expected to grow by 4.8% over the next year, which really puts the company's recent medium-term revenue decline into perspective.
With this information, we find it concerning that Aqualine is trading at a fairly similar P/S compared to the industry. Apparently many investors in the company are way less bearish than recent times would indicate and aren't willing to let go of their stock right now. There's a good chance existing shareholders are setting themselves up for future disappointment if the P/S falls to levels more in line with the recent negative growth rates.
The Bottom Line On Aqualine's P/S
Following Aqualine's share price tumble, its P/S is just clinging on to the industry median P/S. Generally, our preference is to limit the use of the price-to-sales ratio to establishing what the market thinks about the overall health of a company.
We find it unexpected that Aqualine trades at a P/S ratio that is comparable to the rest of the industry, despite experiencing declining revenues during the medium-term, while the industry as a whole is expected to grow. When we see revenue heading backwards in the context of growing industry forecasts, it'd make sense to expect a possible share price decline on the horizon, sending the moderate P/S lower. Unless the the circumstances surrounding the recent medium-term improve, it wouldn't be wrong to expect a a difficult period ahead for the company's shareholders.
