ITOCHU Corporation (TSE:8001) has announced that it will pay a dividend of ¥80.00 per share on the 26th of June. This takes the annual payment to 2.4% of the current stock price, which is about average for the industry.

ITOCHU's Payment Has Solid Earnings Coverage
Unless the payments are sustainable, the dividend yield doesn't mean too much. However, ITOCHU's earnings easily cover the dividend. This means that most of its earnings are being retained to grow the business.
Looking forward, earnings per share is forecast to rise by 27.4% over the next year. If the dividend continues on this path, the payout ratio could be 28% by next year, which we think can be pretty sustainable going forward.
ITOCHU Has A Solid Track Record
The company has a sustained record of paying dividends with very little fluctuation. Since 2014, the dividend has gone from ¥42.00 total annually to ¥160.00. This works out to be a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of approximately 14% a year over that time. So, dividends have been growing pretty quickly, and even more impressively, they haven't experienced any notable falls during this period.
The Dividend Looks Likely To Grow
Investors who have held shares in the company for the past few years will be happy with the dividend income they have received. We are encouraged to see that ITOCHU has grown earnings per share at 12% per year over the past five years. Growth in EPS bodes well for the dividend, as does the low payout ratio that the company is currently reporting.
We Really Like ITOCHU's Dividend
Overall, we think this could be an attractive income stock, and it is only getting better by paying a higher dividend this year. Earnings are easily covering distributions, and the company is generating plenty of cash. Taking this all into consideration, this looks like it could be a good dividend opportunity.
It's important to note that companies having a consistent dividend policy will generate greater investor confidence than those having an erratic one.
