Marumae (TSE:6264) Will Pay A Larger Dividend Than Last Year At ¥25.00
Marumae Co., Ltd.'s (TSE:6264) dividend will be increasing from last year's payment of the same period to ¥25.00 on 25th of November. This will take the annual payment to 2.7% of the stock price, which is above what most companies in the industry pay.
Marumae's Future Dividend Projections Appear Well Covered By Earnings
While it is great to have a strong dividend yield, we should also consider whether the payment is sustainable. Based on the last payment, Marumae's earnings were much higher than the dividend, but it wasn't converting those earnings into cash flow. No cash flows could definitely make returning cash to shareholders difficult, or at least mean the balance sheet will come under pressure.
If the trend of the last few years continues, EPS will grow by 8.1% over the next 12 months. Assuming the dividend continues along recent trends, we think the payout ratio could be 46% by next year, which is in a pretty sustainable range.

Marumae's Dividend Has Lacked Consistency
The track record isn't the longest, but we are already seeing a bit of instability in the payments. The annual payment during the last 4 years was ¥22.00 in 2021, and the most recent fiscal year payment was ¥40.00. This works out to be a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of approximately 16% a year over that time. Marumae has grown distributions at a rapid rate despite cutting the dividend at least once in the past. Companies that cut once often cut again, so we would be cautious about buying this stock solely for the dividend income.
The Dividend Has Growth Potential
With a relatively unstable dividend, it's even more important to see if earnings per share is growing. Marumae has seen EPS rising for the last five years, at 8.1% per annum. The company is paying out a lot of its cash as a dividend, but it looks okay based on the payout ratio.
In Summary
Overall, this is probably not a great income stock, even though the dividend is being raised at the moment. While the low payout ratio is a redeeming feature, this is offset by the minimal cash to cover the payments. We don't think Marumae is a great stock to add to your portfolio if income is your focus.
It's important to note that companies having a consistent dividend policy will generate greater investor confidence than those having an erratic one.
