The board of Dai-Dan Co., Ltd. (TSE:1980) has announced that it will be paying its dividend of ¥71.00 on the 30th of June, an increased payment from last year's comparable dividend. This takes the dividend yield to 3.9%, which shareholders will be pleased with.

Dai-Dan's Future Dividend Projections Appear Well Covered By Earnings

A big dividend yield for a few years doesn't mean much if it can't be sustained. Dai-Dan is quite easily earning enough to cover the dividend, however it is being let down by weak cash flows. In general, we consider cash flow to be more important than earnings, so we would be cautious about relying on the sustainability of this dividend.

The next year is set to see EPS grow by 4.8%. If the dividend continues along recent trends, we estimate the payout ratio will be 48%, which is in the range that makes us comfortable with the sustainability of the dividend.

Dai-Dan Has A Solid Track Record

The company has an extended history of paying stable dividends. The dividend has gone from an annual total of ¥16.00 in 2014 to the most recent total annual payment of ¥142.00. This works out to be a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of approximately 24% a year over that time. Rapidly growing dividends for a long time is a very valuable feature for an income stock.

The Dividend Looks Likely To Grow

The company's investors will be pleased to have been receiving dividend income for some time. It's encouraging to see that Dai-Dan has been growing its earnings per share at 17% a year over the past five years. A low payout ratio and decent growth suggests that the company is reinvesting well, and it also has plenty of room to increase the dividend over time.

Our Thoughts On Dai-Dan's Dividend

Overall, we always like to see the dividend being raised, but we don't think Dai-Dan will make a great income stock. With cash flows lacking, it is difficult to see how the company can sustain a dividend payment. We don't think Dai-Dan is a great stock to add to your portfolio if income is your focus.

Companies possessing a stable dividend policy will likely enjoy greater investor interest than those suffering from a more inconsistent approach.
