Here's Why Infrastrutture Wireless Italiane (BIT:INW) Can Manage Its Debt Responsibly
David Iben put it well when he said, 'Volatility is not a risk we care about. What we care about is avoiding the permanent loss of capital.' So it seems the smart money knows that debt - which is usually involved in bankruptcies - is a very important factor, when you assess how risky a company is. Importantly, Infrastrutture Wireless Italiane S.p.A. (BIT:INW) does carry debt. But the more important question is: how much risk is that debt creating?
Why Does Debt Bring Risk?
Debt and other liabilities become risky for a business when it cannot easily fulfill those obligations, either with free cash flow or by raising capital at an attractive price. If things get really bad, the lenders can take control of the business. While that is not too common, we often do see indebted companies permanently diluting shareholders because lenders force them to raise capital at a distressed price. By replacing dilution, though, debt can be an extremely good tool for businesses that need capital to invest in growth at high rates of return. When we examine debt levels, we first consider both cash and debt levels, together.

What Is Infrastrutture Wireless Italiane's Net Debt?
The chart below, which you can click on for greater detail, shows that Infrastrutture Wireless Italiane had €3.32b in debt in September 2023; about the same as the year before. And it doesn't have much cash, so its net debt is about the same.
A Look At Infrastrutture Wireless Italiane's Liabilities
We can see from the most recent balance sheet that Infrastrutture Wireless Italiane had liabilities of €658.4m falling due within a year, and liabilities of €4.34b due beyond that. On the other hand, it had cash of €59.3m and €190.7m worth of receivables due within a year. So its liabilities outweigh the sum of its cash and (near-term) receivables by €4.75b.
Infrastrutture Wireless Italiane has a very large market capitalization of €11.0b, so it could very likely raise cash to ameliorate its balance sheet, if the need arose. But we definitely want to keep our eyes open to indications that its debt is bringing too much risk.
We use two main ratios to inform us about debt levels relative to earnings. The first is net debt divided by earnings before interest, tax, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA), while the second is how many times its earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) covers its interest expense (or its interest cover, for short). This way, we consider both the absolute quantum of the debt, as well as the interest rates paid on it.
Infrastrutture Wireless Italiane has a debt to EBITDA ratio of 4.9 and its EBIT covered its interest expense 5.0 times. This suggests that while the debt levels are significant, we'd stop short of calling them problematic. We note that Infrastrutture Wireless Italiane grew its EBIT by 22% in the last year, and that should make it easier to pay down debt, going forward. When analysing debt levels, the balance sheet is the obvious place to start. But ultimately the future profitability of the business will decide if Infrastrutture Wireless Italiane can strengthen its balance sheet over time. So if you want to see what the professionals think, you might find this free report on analyst profit forecasts to be interesting.
Finally, while the tax-man may adore accounting profits, lenders only accept cold hard cash. So it's worth checking how much of that EBIT is backed by free cash flow. In the last three years, Infrastrutture Wireless Italiane's free cash flow amounted to 46% of its EBIT, less than we'd expect. That's not great, when it comes to paying down debt.
Our View
When it comes to the balance sheet, the standout positive for Infrastrutture Wireless Italiane was the fact that it seems able to grow its EBIT confidently. But the other factors we noted above weren't so encouraging. In particular, net debt to EBITDA gives us cold feet. When we consider all the factors mentioned above, we do feel a bit cautious about Infrastrutture Wireless Italiane's use of debt. While we appreciate debt can enhance returns on equity, we'd suggest that shareholders keep close watch on its debt levels, lest they increase. When analysing debt levels, the balance sheet is the obvious place to start. But ultimately, every company can contain risks that exist outside of the balance sheet.
