It's Down 28% But Health Italia S.p.A. (BIT:HI) Could Be Riskier Than It Looks
Health Italia S.p.A. (BIT:HI) shareholders that were waiting for something to happen have been dealt a blow with a 28% share price drop in the last month. Instead of being rewarded, shareholders who have already held through the last twelve months are now sitting on a 31% share price drop.
Although its price has dipped substantially, Health Italia may still be sending very bullish signals at the moment with its price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 6.1x, since almost half of all companies in Italy have P/E ratios greater than 16x and even P/E's higher than 27x are not unusual. However, the P/E might be quite low for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.
Health Italia certainly has been doing a great job lately as it's been growing earnings at a really rapid pace. It might be that many expect the strong earnings performance to degrade substantially, which has repressed the P/E. If that doesn't eventuate, then existing shareholders have reason to be quite optimistic about the future direction of the share price.

What Are Growth Metrics Telling Us About The Low P/E?
There's an inherent assumption that a company should far underperform the market for P/E ratios like Health Italia's to be considered reasonable.
If we review the last year of earnings growth, the company posted a terrific increase of 61%. Pleasingly, EPS has also lifted 111% in aggregate from three years ago, thanks to the last 12 months of growth. Therefore, it's fair to say the earnings growth recently has been superb for the company.
Comparing that to the market, which is only predicted to deliver 24% growth in the next 12 months, the company's momentum is stronger based on recent medium-term annualised earnings results.
In light of this, it's peculiar that Health Italia's P/E sits below the majority of other companies. It looks like most investors are not convinced the company can maintain its recent growth rates.
The Final Word
Shares in Health Italia have plummeted and its P/E is now low enough to touch the ground. While the price-to-earnings ratio shouldn't be the defining factor in whether you buy a stock or not, it's quite a capable barometer of earnings expectations.
Our examination of Health Italia revealed its three-year earnings trends aren't contributing to its P/E anywhere near as much as we would have predicted, given they look better than current market expectations. There could be some major unobserved threats to earnings preventing the P/E ratio from matching this positive performance. At least price risks look to be very low if recent medium-term earnings trends continue, but investors seem to think future earnings could see a lot of volatility.
We don't want to rain on the parade too much, but we did also find 2 warning signs for Health Italia (1 makes us a bit uncomfortable!) that you need to be mindful of.
