The board of DiaSorin S.p.A. (BIT:DIA) has announced that it will be paying its dividend of €1.15 on the 22nd of May, an increased payment from last year's comparable dividend. This takes the annual payment to 1.3% of the current stock price, which unfortunately is below what the industry is paying.

DiaSorin's Dividend Is Well Covered By Earnings
Even a low dividend yield can be attractive if it is sustained for years on end. The last dividend was quite easily covered by DiaSorin's earnings. This indicates that a lot of the earnings are being reinvested into the business, with the aim of fueling growth.
Over the next year, EPS is forecast to expand by 55.7%. If the dividend continues on this path, the payout ratio could be 27% by next year, which we think can be pretty sustainable going forward.
DiaSorin Has A Solid Track Record
The company has been paying a dividend for a long time, and it has been quite stable which gives us confidence in the future dividend potential. The dividend has gone from an annual total of €0.55 in 2014 to the most recent total annual payment of €1.15. This works out to be a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of approximately 7.7% a year over that time. The dividend has been growing very nicely for a number of years, and has given its shareholders some nice income in their portfolios.
DiaSorin May Find It Hard To Grow The Dividend
The company's investors will be pleased to have been receiving dividend income for some time. However, DiaSorin's EPS was effectively flat over the past five years, which could stop the company from paying more every year. The company has been growing at a pretty soft 1.0% per annum, and is paying out quite a lot of its earnings to shareholders. This isn't bad in itself, but unless earnings growth pick up we wouldn't expect dividends to grow either.
We Really Like DiaSorin's Dividend
Overall, we think this could be an attractive income stock, and it is only getting better by paying a higher dividend this year. Earnings are easily covering distributions, and the company is generating plenty of cash. All of these factors considered, we think this has solid potential as a dividend stock.
It's important to note that companies having a consistent dividend policy will generate greater investor confidence than those having an erratic one.
