Emak (BIT:EM) Has Announced That It Will Be Increasing Its Dividend To €0.075
Emak S.p.A. (BIT:EM) will increase its dividend on the 8th of June to €0.075. This will take the annual payment from 5.1% to 5.1% of the stock price, which is above what most companies in the industry pay.

Emak's Earnings Easily Cover the Distributions
While it is great to have a strong dividend yield, we should also consider whether the payment is sustainable. Before making this announcement, Emak was paying a whopping 105% as a dividend, but this only made up 36% of its overall earnings. While the business may be attempting to set a balanced dividend policy, a cash payout ratio this high might expose the dividend to being cut if the business ran into some challenges.
The next year is set to see EPS grow by 1.0%. If the dividend continues on this path, the payout ratio could be 41% by next year, which we think can be pretty sustainable going forward.
Dividend Volatility
The company's dividend history has been marked by instability, with at least 1 cut in the last 10 years. The dividend has gone from €0.025 in 2012 to the most recent annual payment of €0.075. This means that it has been growing its distributions at 12% per annum over that time. Emak has grown distributions at a rapid rate despite cutting the dividend at least once in the past. Companies that cut once often cut again, so we would be cautious about buying this stock solely for the dividend income.
The Dividend Looks Likely To Grow
Given that the dividend has been cut in the past, we need to check if earnings are growing and if that might lead to stronger dividends in the future. Emak has seen EPS rising for the last five years, at 12% per annum. Emak definitely has the potential to grow its dividend in the future with earnings on an uptrend and a low payout ratio.
In Summary
In summary, while it's always good to see the dividend being raised, we don't think Emak's payments are rock solid. While the low payout ratio is redeeming feature, this is offset by the minimal cash to cover the payments. We don't think Emak is a great stock to add to your portfolio if income is your focus.
