To find a multi-bagger stock, what are the underlying trends we should look for in a business? Firstly, we'd want to identify a growing return on capital employed (ROCE) and then alongside that, an ever-increasing base of capital employed. Put simply, these types of businesses are compounding machines, meaning they are continually reinvesting their earnings at ever-higher rates of return. So, when we ran our eye over Interpump Group's (BIT:IP) trend of ROCE, we liked what we saw.

What Is Return On Capital Employed (ROCE)?

For those who don't know, ROCE is a measure of a company's yearly pre-tax profit (its return), relative to the capital employed in the business. Analysts use this formula to calculate it for Interpump Group:

Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)

0.15 = €332m ÷ (€3.0b - €781m) (Based on the trailing twelve months to June 2022).

So, Interpump Group has an ROCE of 15%. In absolute terms, that's a satisfactory return, but compared to the Machinery industry average of 10% it's much better.

What Does the ROCE Trend For Interpump Group Tell Us?

While the returns on capital are good, they haven't moved much. Over the past five years, ROCE has remained relatively flat at around 15% and the business has deployed 94% more capital into its operations. 15% is a pretty standard return, and it provides some comfort knowing that Interpump Group has consistently earned this amount. Over long periods of time, returns like these might not be too exciting, but with consistency they can pay off in terms of share price returns.

The Bottom Line On Interpump Group's ROCE

In the end, Interpump Group has proven its ability to adequately reinvest capital at good rates of return. In light of this, the stock has only gained 32% over the last five years for shareholders who have owned the stock in this period. So because of the trends we're seeing, we'd recommend looking further into this stock to see if it has the makings of a multi-bagger.
