Shareholders in Indraprastha Gas (NSE:IGL) are in the red if they invested a year ago
While it may not be enough for some shareholders, we think it is good to see the Indraprastha Gas Limited (NSE:IGL) share price up 22% in a single quarter. But that doesn't change the reality of under-performance over the last twelve months. After all, the share price is down 19% in the last year, significantly under-performing the market.
Now let's have a look at the company's fundamentals, and see if the long term shareholder return has matched the performance of the underlying business.
While the efficient markets hypothesis continues to be taught by some, it has been proven that markets are over-reactive dynamic systems, and investors are not always rational. One flawed but reasonable way to assess how sentiment around a company has changed is to compare the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price.
Unhappily, Indraprastha Gas had to report a 13% decline in EPS over the last year. This reduction in EPS is not as bad as the 19% share price fall. Unsurprisingly, given the lack of EPS growth, the market seems to be more cautious about the stock.
You can see below how EPS has changed over time (discover the exact values by clicking on the image).
It's probably worth noting that the CEO is paid less than the median at similar sized companies. But while CEO remuneration is always worth checking, the really important question is whether the company can grow earnings going forward. A Different Perspective
While the broader market gained around 0.5% in the last year, Indraprastha Gas shareholders lost 17% (even including dividends). Even the share prices of good stocks drop sometimes, but we want to see improvements in the fundamental metrics of a business, before getting too interested. Longer term investors wouldn't be so upset, since they would have made 3%, each year, over five years. It could be that the recent sell-off is an opportunity, so it may be worth checking the fundamental data for signs of a long term growth trend. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too. Consider for instance, the ever-present spectre of investment risk. We've identified 1 warning sign with Indraprastha Gas , and understanding them should be part of your investment process.
